Two announcements to share with you – one for a new Spanish-language preschool, another for a new tutoring service that addresses attention-span issues as well as conventional tutoring and ESL work – full details ahead:

First, from Manuela Slye, announcing Cometa Playschool:

We are thrilled to announce the launching of Cometa, the one and only Spanish Language Playschool in West Seattle! We will start with exciting Summer Camps in July and August and then our preschool program will start in the Fall. Cometa is an innovative home based preschool located in the beautiful North Admiral District. Our curriculum encompasses early learning and second language acquisition in a fun and stimulating environment. It is a place for children to thrive and learn about themselves, their community and the world we live in. Children will learn Spanish through play, music, stories, baking, gardening and more! Teachers are native Spanish speakers trained in Early Childhood Education, Reflective Parenting, CPR and First Aid.

Quick Study Tutoring opened March 10th at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle at 4408 Delridge
Way S.W.(and operates on Vashon, as well.) Quick Study is an all-ages service that offers standard tutoring for K-12, English as a Second Language, and Body-Mind work – Finding Focus, a program that uses movement, voice, and rhythm with students who struggle to stay on task.

With Finding Focus, Brenda Howald uses her background in dance and music to address attention span disorder by building pattern recognition in a child, a skill essential to assimilating academic information. The student and tutor build ever- longer sequences of movement and sound, engaging all three parts of the brain in the process – the cognitive, sensate, and emotional centers. The whole child is brought into play and “play” is the operative word in this approach which is most often used as a break-out time that frames the homework of the day. When learning is viewed as an interactive experience, attitudes around homework change.

Standard tutoring at Quick Study includes: K-5 all subjects; Middle and High school – Reading for content, Writing, Spanish and Study Skills.

In the English as a Second Language program for adults or children, English Language Learners improve speaking skills through situation-based lessons, hearing and practicing the phrases for everyday activities: buying food at the store, counting and receiving change, taking a message on the telephone, etc. Reading and writing practice is interwoven with the building of oral and aural skills.

Brenda Howald has worked as a bi-lingual aide in Spanish in the Seattle schools, and has taught English as a Second Language to students from Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Korea, China, Nicaragua, Japan, and Spain.
