Crime Watch followup: Suspect charged in “burglarbustindad” case

In this comment earlier today, the Gatewood crime victim-turned-crimefighter known only as “burglarbustindad” mentioned that the suspect in last week’s burglary at his Gatewood home has been charged. We just got the documents from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office: 19-year-old Kenneth Shouting is charged with residential burglary. Read on for the police narrative included in the court documents:

Though BBD did a TV interview, he asked not to be named in it, and didn’t share his name with us for public use either. So here we are calling him BBDad:

On 9/15/09 at about 1115 am (BBDad) left his residence. At about 1555 hrs (neighbor) observed a B/M teenager, wearing all black and carrying a red and black backpack walking away from (BBDad’s) house. At about 1637hrs (BBDad’s wife) arrived home and found the front door of the residence open. (She) notified (him) of the burglary and then phoned 911. (The couple) discovered several items were missing from inside the residence including a laptop and their son’s coins.

(BBDad) learned what (neighbor) had observed and decided to go to QFC at 2600 SW Barton and see if the suspect was using the Coinstar machine to dispose of the stolen coins. (He) arrived at QFC at 1718hrs and observed Kenneth Shouting using the Coinstar machine. Shouting had a red and black backpack and his clothes matched the description given to him by (neighbor). (BBDad) approached Shouting and observed his computer, iPod and speakers inside the backpack. A short struggle between Shouting and (BBDad) ensued and an employee at QFC phoned 911. Officer Wind and Officer Berg arrived at QFC and placed Shouting under arrest after they discovered he was in possession of (BBDad’s) stolen items. Officer Berg also discovered the (couple’s) Nikon camera and misc cords in Shouting’s possession. Officer Hylton located a gold ring in Shouting’s front pocket that belonged to the (couple).

The backpack that Shouting had in his possession was positively identified by (neighbor) as the backpack she saw the subject walking away from the (victims’) house wearing.

Shouting remains jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail; the court documents requesting that amount point out that he “has a prior conviction for Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree (2008) and several adjudications for misdemeanors as a juvenile.” (Jail records also show he spent time behind bars earlier this year related to an accusation of domestic-violence assault.) He turns 20 in about two weeks and his “last known address” is in West Seattle.

This is really great news, but I will feel safer when it’s the police catching the criminals, not the victims.

not only will mr. shouting have the pleasure of jail time, he’s also got the joy of realizing he’s an idiot to carry around misc. stolen goods while trying to cash-in some change. not only a criminal, but a rather unintelligent one at that. his parents must be very proud.

Hey WSB: today some teenage kids (a black kid and an asian kid) came to the door and said they were out to talk to like a hundred people, no note pad, looked like they wanted in. Anyone have a like experience?

Thanks, WSB. And I don’tmean to sound so race-focused, but that’s what I saw. The kids had no substance — just wanted in and it seemed fishy. And we’re right next to 34th and Henderson. Kids need to get a clue and a better story, but if they have bad ideas, they’re goona get hurt or jailedor both before long if they keep up. And does a teacher really tell kids to go out and talk to 100 people, door to door? Come on, how stupid. Is that whar they told the 34th and henderson folks too? Sadly, those kids are gonna make it into the police blotter the way they’re going.

I too had a kid come to the door yesterday evening near the other poster. He said he needed to get 100 people to like him or something like that. He was munching on a bag of chips and started the conversation by saying “I don’t know you either”. WTH? I’m going to like you now? These guys are not the sharpest tools in the shed. He tried to show me his “creds” but I declined and sent him on his way.

Everyone, please watch out for our neighborhood. These idiots are getting more brazen every day. At least until it starts to rain again ;-)

i’m the 34th and henderson person. yeah, seemed totally fishy. he walked up through my completely fenced in yard and had some story that made absolutely no sense about wanting to meet new people, commenting about my nice, big yard, holding some laminated tri-fold thing when i asked him what he wanted. he said he wanted to meet new people. i was creeped because i thought he was saying that he knew i was a new person in the neighborhood (i am–i moved in Saturday). when i told him i was busy, he kept saying it would only take a minute. ironically, i was sitting on my couch signing papers to get my alarm installed with an alarm rep. i just moved here, so i was a bit creeped out.

I will help the community follow this story.
This guy needs to be off the streets and out of your house.
It appears that I need to go to the courthouse and pay for each document in the matter or pay in advance for 100 pages. If anyone knows a better method, please let me know.

BBD, I follow court cases so you really don’t have to do that unless you’re going to do it for your own sake. I don’t publish the documents here on the site when they contain victim and witness names in crime cases but I got the charging papers yesterday from the prosecuting attorney’s media person. What will be REALLY helpful will be if you keep us posted on court appearances, which get changed a LOT and often the victims are the only ones who get timely notification. I am willing to cover court hearings in the case but your firsthand report on what happens will be most valuable – and if you send your reports on what happened, from your perspective, it will be a rare look at how a case progresses through court, from the “victim” perspective, and I’ll be more than thrilled to publish them here – TR

There is this man (if you want to call him that) that has been going around the Fauntleroy Morgan junction area. I’ve seen him around for years. But, recently I’ve caught him in my neighbors yard by their shed lookin suspicious. Then, a few days later. I saw him prowling cars on 40th between Morgan and Fauntleroy. The cops were notified of him doing that. BUT! tell me why, later that night around 2:30a.m. I was up and heard a really loud cracking noise. I got up to look but noone was there at the time. I didnt notice my broken fence until the morning. I find this guy to be a threat. If he’s retaliating in this way, whats next? A persons life? He is a white male brown hair kind of shaggy looking. Not very tall about 5’7-5’8 and thin. and usually walks around with a backpack on. BE AWARE!
