West Seattle Crime Watch: Bike thieves; muddy-foot burglars

Two reports to share this morning: First, Marie reports that a bike like the one on the left is one of two bikes that were stolen from in front of the Game Stop store on Roxbury Thursday afternoon (map) – her son and a friend parked the bikes and two teenagers “grabbed them and rode off,” she says. She is asking for people to be on the lookout for the bikes: “A gray Free Agent BMX racing bike, very nice, was a Christmas present; the second bike was a vintage Dino BMX bike. It is chrome with orange lettering and red handle grips. They are irreplaceable; the boys are heartbroken.”

Second report – Karleen says her neighbor’s house near SW Oregon and 22nd (map) was broken into yesterday afternoon: “The thieves apparently entered through the kitchen window, hopped over the sink and helped themselves to the XBOX and a few games – also missing is a laptop and a ring. They left out the back door, leaving muddy footprints, and the back door was left wide open. They went as far as trying to re-install the window screen they bent on entry.” Both of these incidents have been reported to the police; later today, we’ll share some information from a neighborhood-organizing meeting last night elsewhere in West Seattle, regarding how best to protect against burglars.

ADDED 10:12 AM: Shortly after we first published this, Ray e-mailed another bike-theft report: “Our son’s bike was stolen from our backyard between noon and 3 pm, Thursday, Sept. 3. We live in North Admiral, on 45th near College Ave [map]. His bike is a red, REDLINE racer, made by Torker.”

Hope they find the bikes in good shape and can return them to these kids.

Maybe his friends are trying to sell the bikes to post his bail. Sad.

Guys – not defending any criminal known or unknown, but please do not speculate on whether any certain person has committed any particular crime (or is linked to it), when there’s been no official info to that effect. There are other repeat offenders in West Seattle, lots of them, as in any community, unfortunately; we have not had as much name information on charged suspects in some of the cases we’ve covered but that will change with time (as I mentioned in another comment thread, we’ve just applied for access to a more-expensive but more timely and comprehensive court-information system, the same one used by citywide newsrooms, and that for starters will help) – TR

What did they look like? MY neighbors across the street have a teen son who seems to come home with a new bike every few weeks. We live close to White Center too.

I live on Pigeon Point and we saw an abandoned BMX bike much like the one described in your report left on the sidewalk on the corner of Delridge and Andover SW. We thought it was odd seeing a fancy bike like that without an owner in sight so perhaps it was the bike that was stolen. Alas, it’s no longer there… sorry for your loss! Cursed thieves!

It feels terrible when someone steals something from your kids. Especially if you can’t afford to replace it. It happened to me once before. Believe me, my back yard gets robbed a few times a year. As soon as we leave anything out that’s worth more than 5 dollars it’s gone. But when a thief walked down into my backyard and stole my 1.5 year old’s power wheels chopper (worth about 200 bucks) I had a totally different feeling. I thought “who could EVER steal from a child?!?!”

I was out painting my garage the other day, I’m on the 7700 block of 18th Ave SW. Well these kids that always ask me if they can do yard work for me were going through a neighbors back yard from the alley, looking very hard at the stuff they had lying around. They couldn’t have been any older than 12! When they continued down the alley they asked me, yet again although I politely refuse every time, “Excuse me, I was wondering if I could do any yard work for you?” I told him no thanks. Then he and his friend or brother started stretching their necks out to look in my back yard! soon the boy spoke up “excuse me, do you have any bikes that you don’t want anymore?” I looked down at their nice looking, new’ish bikes they were ridding on and told them, “no sorry.” Necks stretched out even further they spotted an old rusty Schwinn bike my husband had bought on Craigslist for 50 bucks a few years back for a project. And they said “how about that bike over there?” I said “you don’t want that bike, that bike is old.” the boy insisted his 16 year old brother would want it! I told him to come back to ask my husband, I had no idea how to handle these boys anymore! I can’t help but feel suspicious. Ugh… Anyhow, they headed South towards Roxbury. Don’t know if it could have been them but I can’t help but feel suspicious about these kids.

Sorry, comment time is over.
