Reader report: Fence coming down at field on ex-Denny site

Thanks to Alice Kuder for that photo and word that the fence is finally coming down from around the big open field at what some dubbed “Denny Park” – the former Denny International Middle School site that now holds playfields and tennis courts (and is technically just an extension of nearby Southwest Athletic Complex, all Seattle Public Schools-owned). It’s been four months since the site officially opened for public use.

I walked by tonight and noticed that there’s still re-bar sticking out. Some covered with saftey tops, some not. hope they get those taken care of along with a good cutting of the clover, I mean grass in the next few days! otherwise, it’s so nice to see a huge patch of grass in the hood.

I do need to add a photo Alice sent of the clover – she observed there’s vastly more of it than grass (and while driving past it later in the day, we noticed the same thing)!

I walked by about a week and a half ago with friends, and we saw a killdeer pair with a tiny downy chick, perhaps only hours or so old. Please take extra care in the newly-unfenced field. These open field ground nesters usually have 4 chicks, but we saw only 1 – the others may have been food for a predator. Visit this site: http://www.birdwatching.com/stories/killdeer.html to learn more. As our open spaces are closing in, our native wildlife needs some help from us!

Sorry, comment time is over.
