West Seattle wildlife: Nesting hummingbird in Fauntleroy

If you ever wonder where those beautiful hummingbirds seen in local yards go to nest, or rest … maybe they all go to Fauntleroy. “Woodsman Steve” shares this photo by friend Michael Oxman, taken in Fauntleroy Park. “Pretty special since you never see a hummer sitting still,” observed Steve. “In fact, in all my years on this planet I have never seen a nest.”

(It’s been exactly one year since the last time we were lucky enough to receive a hummingbird-nest photo to share with you … last year the folks at The Kenney [WSB sponsor] on the north end of Fauntleroy were watching theirs!)

ADDED SATURDAY NIGHT: Steve later shared another photo by Michael, same hummingbird, different angle:

And look at what a work of art that nest is! Looks like someone’s sweater is blended in there. Gorgeous shot!

Wow! Just gorgeous! I love the detail of her ruby throat. Actually with that coloring it is probably Dad on the nest.

During the 2010 Garden Tour one of the gardens had a hummingbird nest with the birds attending the nest during the show. A visitor took an amazing photo and we ended up using it for the 2011 poster.

I’ve seen hummingbirds perched on power lines, surveying the neighborhood. But I’ve never seen one of their nests. What beautiful color and detail in this photo! Thanks for sharing.

@Yeah-me: Males do not incubate the eggs. This female has typical red markings only on her chin. The male has a red hood. Poor mama will do all the work starting with nest building all the way to feeding her babies until they appear to be larger than she is. We had the delight of watching a nest outside our living room window last spring. Pictures like this have us wishing we knew what spot she has chosen this year. Trustfully not one where the nosey neighbors keep peeking into her bedroom.

Sorry, comment time is over.
