Last week I picked up a beer I’d never seen before at WS Thriftway.

It’s “Purple Yam Porter” brewed by Laughing Buddha brewery.

Tonight I tried it and it was awesome with a capital “A”!

Checking online it looks like they’re a fairly new brewery located in South Park (so kind of close to WS) and they specialize in Asian style beers.

On your next trip to Thriftway you might want to look for it. Their website shows their beer is also available at Husky and Beveridge PP.

I heard they had a ginger beer (not gingerale, but actual beer with ginger added in the brew) that is simply AMAZING.

Thanks for the reminder – we keep meaning to get there. Maybe next weekend we’ll have to make a run to the brewery. Anyone else wanna go? JenV? We owe you guys a pitcher…

Their ginger pale ale is pretty good actually, I was skeptical at first but I’m a fan. I’d like to try the yam porter.

Oooh, I’d be up for it Aim. They’ve got a really cute little tiki bar set-up and the people are really nice. It is kinda hard to find, but once you’ve found it, you can also find Baron Brewing right around the corner!

The purple yam is called Ube. Not really a yam, but a tuber. I have made ice cream with it, and the store down the street from me sells Ube Jam. Laughing Buddha also sells a Pandan brown ale that is amazing. Pandan is a sweet, hazelnut tasting leaf that is used in a lot of Asian desserts.

I saw the Purple Yam Porter at TW and almost picked it up based on this review…but the price tag stopped me. Was I hallucinating, or was it over $9 for one bottle?

Wes, I paid $3.99 for the bottle of Pandan Brown Ale from Husky Deli, and if I remember correctly that was the same price I paid at WS Thriftway for the Purple Yam Porter.

Maybe you have temporary snow blindness?

JimmyG, okay, I thought that seemed a bit steep. I will re-investigate during this afternoon’s “essential supply run”.

Maybe it was accidentally placed in one of the Unibroue slots, which can be around 9 a bottle.
