aimymichelleParticipantHello, I’m wondering if anyone has a laptop that they’d like to sell that is relatively nice but nothing too fancy since I just need it for writing articles and blogging which I do in addition to nannying. I’d like to be able to get some writing done while the kids I watch are sleeping so I can be more efficient.
If you have anything that fits this category I’d love to talk to you. My price range is $free-150.

KenParticipantI am looking through my pile for one I have not robbed parts from…
Is there any chance you are disabled, unemployed or on public assistance?

aimymichelleParticipantno i am a part time nanny.

KenParticipantI don’t have a working laptop in your price range. I have robbed parts from all of them except my new ones.
However there are several on craigs list each week in the 60.00 200.00 range. These are often pentium 3 and are 5 to 8 years old
But. If you can get to 250 + tax range, there are several netbooks available new and those will run everything you want and more.

aimymichelleParticipanthow much are your new ones?
December 13, 2010 at 3:48 pm #710783
KenParticipantwell. the new ones are the ones I use all the time.
I know it seems odd to some but I have a dozen computers running different operating systems and combinations of software and hardware. Some for specific purposes. One is used exclusively to convert outlook express files to office outlook 2003 so they can be imported into office outlook 2007 and 2010. It also converts old pagmaker docs from mac versions to windows versions and imports them to office.
The rest are similarly occupied or setup on the shelf for when a particular combo is needed.
I am building another network file server now to replace an aging one which will free up some p4 desktops to give away.
I get repairable laptops or laptops that are obsolete by todays standards fairly often but I usually have someone on public assistance or unemployed ready to take them.
I have a rather large pile of dead laptops I rob parts from.
If you like I will watch craigs list for a few weeks and watch for good quality used laptops (or dead ones I have working parts for).
Is your budget still 50 to 150? Do you prefer pc or mac.

KenParticipantThis g3 power book just popped up and is in Burien. Looks good for an older machine.

I just setup one of these for a friend. This really is new.
They are currently 499 in most venues.

KenParticipantFor those playing along at home….

This is actually a pretty good deal if you like to play with your hardware. It is an MXM alienware laptop with upgradable cpu, video and other parts. Easy to work on since many of the internal boards are designed to be replacable.
Prices on core 2 stuff will continue to fall as i3, i5, and i7 prices drop on the newest stuff after x-mas.

KenParticipantA no go.

This is someone in West Seattle trying to sell a pentium 100MHZ laptop from 1997. It will take a MAX of 40MB memory.
I have laptops of this era and will neither sell nor give them away. They will make you scream and tear your hair out in frustration. They were crap back in 1999 when I inherited a dozen of them in my former corporate role as the in house repair guy.
Dude. Don’t sell this to anyone. You will endanger your soul and your karma. Give it away if you must but make sure it is to someone who knows its limitations or to a museum of IT horrors
