The back (south) side of WS High School is not an off-leash dog park. Kids practice there. They play football there. They touch the ground, A LOT.

This is not the place to take your dog to roam free. And poop.

    Gross.

Not only that but ON-Leash is not allowed on the track either. Not sure why people think cleary posted rules don’t apply to them.

The city could make a lot of money (ala Admiral & WS bridge traps) if they would send an animal patrol unit down there every few days.

We walk by the WSHS south side every night, there are always dogs there! Years ago, my older son’s practiced football there, and they would walk the area daily to make sure the area was free of poop! Then they would wait for someone to come clean it up before resuming practice.

I call Hiawatha “Exceptional Dog Park” because almost every dog you see there is an exception to the “NO OFF-LEASH DOGS” rule, or so their owners obviously think. It’s rare to see a dog there that DOESN’T end up off-leash at some point. I’m especially grateful to the owners who let their dogs run around unattended through the kids’ playground area, so we can all experience the greatness of their exceptional dogs. Unfortunately, there are so many exceptional dogs in West Seattle that Hiawatha just isn’t big enough for all of them. Thankfully though, many exceptional dog owners recognize the Truly Exceptional nature of their dogs and so they’re able to take them to run off-leash at Lafayette where signs are posted at each entrance completely prohibiting pets on the playground at all.

Make a report to Seattle Animal Control, they will add it to their patrols.

I’ve made several online complaints to Animal Control about several West Seattle parks that dog owners feel are unofficial off leash areas and they’ve been very responsive.

I’ve seen them out ticketing violators.

Don’t just complain people, take action to stop what irks you.

As everyone probably knows this is a big pet peeve of mine. Definitely call Animal Control. I have spoken with them in the past and have heard from other forum members that officers have been seen giving tickets at Hiawatha. I also know for a fact at least one member of Animal Control reads the WS Blog :)
