JanSParticipantIf she wants to run for higher office in 2012, did she blow it by doing this? Weird – at least to me.

datamuseParticipantThe running consensus among my friends seems to be that something scandalous is about to break.
If that’s true, well…I guess we’ll see.
July 3, 2009 at 10:11 pm #671255
charlabobParticipantMore scandalous than what’s already broken? NPR just postulated that she did it TO run in 2012. And she’s involved in budget battles with the legislature — so maybe she’s a quitter. :-)
July 3, 2009 at 10:13 pm #671256
SueParticipantHow odd. If she honestly thinks that being a lame duck means that she needs to run around her state and waste money by doing nothing of consequence, then why doesn’t she show that it doesn’t have to be that way? There is nothing going on in Alaska that she could be effectively working on for the next 18 months?
She spoke so fast in that press conference, repeating herself, and making all these excuses, that it makes me wonder what she’s hiding. If you make a decision, say it and move on. If you have to come up with a billion excuses why it’s the right decision, then you’re lying to yourself and/or to us.
July 3, 2009 at 10:13 pm #671257
datamuseParticipantIf she’s going to run in 2012, how does resigning now work to her advantage? I’m not asking rhetorically, I’m honestly wondering if anyone can suggest a good answer to that. Because it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. (Although the prospect of her running in 2012 isn’t so much scandalous as entirely unsurprising.)
July 3, 2009 at 10:17 pm #671258
SueParticipantdatamuse, it doesn’t make sense to me either – when you make a commitment to something like that, I’d like to see someone have the integrity to follow through to the end unless something very serious comes up that necessitates stepping down. Perhaps she thought it would be better for Alaska if she wasn’t preoccupied with running for office while governing, but she was able to do that for the VP position last time and it didn’t seem to be a problem. Very confusing.
July 3, 2009 at 10:18 pm #671259
alki_2008ParticipantIt seems that plenty of people want reasons for why she’s resigning…after all, this thread is assuming the reasons for WHY. It’s not as though she could just say “I’m resigning, thank you and have a great weekend”.
I would guess that she’s going into the private sector for something more lucrative.

JoBParticipanti think i am going to look for the Vanity Fair article.
In the meantime.. we get Tim Pawlenty. Lucky us ;(

KenParticipantThe real reason. A sad day for America. An Icon brought low by a wanna be.

CountingCoupMember“Bullwinkle Dead”! Shot down by Alaska Govenor? bwahahaha (good one).
Maybe its a Sarah and Mark Sanford rumor about to break, kidding…
This is a pretty mavericky thing for Palin to do, I suspect the real story why she is stepping down will break soon.
July 4, 2009 at 12:39 am #671263
JanSParticipantCountingCoup…I actually said that about SP and MS not more than an hour ago to a friend – lol…
July 4, 2009 at 12:53 am #671264
CountingCoupMemberJanS, if that happened, there would have to be a movie deal in the makings about it… GMTA BTW
I suspect this wasn’t about a 2012 election, I see no advantage resigning has to that goal, but who knows, it just seems like her excuse is suspect…

RainyDay1235MemberPerhaps she got word from the GOP that they are passing her over completely for any future endorsements – and so she decided to quit this stepping stone of a job? Or if she is truly somewhow using this to run for 2012 – what kind of message does that send? I can’t finish my current job – but let me be president! Scandal-wise – it is interesting that she had to pull Todd off a fishing trip – seems a bit of a rush job…hmmmmm?
July 4, 2009 at 1:28 am #671266
JoBParticipantWell lets see.. she got the numbers from her 2nd quarter PAC, Oberman made mincemeat of her emails with a McCain staffer and Vanity Fair is said to be doing an article….
wait.. there’s more
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gukAXg9H5xRDCkJWJ7-XvcGFoFrwD996RKP80
but to quit immediately? I smell a deal.
and her PAC is still accepting money… donations increased when she announced she would quit as governor…

WSMomParticipantI bet there is a scandal lurking in the shadows. Remember the clothing shopping sprees using GOP campaign funds (McCain staffers referred to the Palins as the “Wasilla Hillbillys”). I won’t be surprised to learn that Sarah played fast and loose with state money. Her resignation speech jumped around from topic to topic like someone who has something to hide.
July 4, 2009 at 6:51 am #671269
JanSParticipantthe VF article is interesting reading…no conclusioins on my part that I want to voice here…but very interesting indeed…
we all have theories…it’ll also be interesting to see how it actually plays out…

HMC RichParticipantI was watching a group of people discussing the GOP and the next Presidential election. It was pointed out by Charles Krauthammer that Sarah Palin had not really taken any steps to bone up certain areas that she is considered weak in. Mara Liasson also stated that Palin could prove to be a quick study and that she is still in the media this long after the election. I believe she stated that Sarah was not ready yet due to not pursuing the information needed to really be Presidential Candidate (or something like that).
The way Sarah spoke in the whole news conference signals to me that she feels Alaska is in a good place for her to step aside to pursue other options. I also believe she wants to spend more time with her family for a small time. Also to relieve the state’s burden of frivolous lawsuits aimed basically at her. If you actually listen to parts of her speech she directly attacks the current national policies being acted on since the election. She cleaned up and paid back the “per diem” issue. I think she wants to leave Alaska with as clean a slate as possible.
My two cents is that she is definitely going to run for the Presidency in 2012. I also believe she is going to enlist some of the beltway experts and delve into those areas that will allow her to learn the ins and outs of the Washington DC and Federal scene. Just a guess.
July 4, 2009 at 5:04 pm #671271
JanSParticipantHMC Rich…I respect your opinion…but how does quitting help her? It’s not a good step , in my opinion.
I listened to her hastily put together speech…we didn’t hear the same thing. And maybe that’s partly because we hear what we want to hear…but, come presidential time, what happens when she simply wants to walk away to spend more family time? Does she just quit? Being a lame duck gov. does not mean that she would simply go around and make speeches…she could still serve her constituents until the end…and she chose not to. I guess I just don’t get it…
July 4, 2009 at 5:07 pm #671272
YardvarkMemberWhatever the reason for her resignation (I vote for stress reduction)…
There’s just no way she’s a potential candidate anymore.
Being fair, she didn’t really have many amazing credentials to start with, hasn’t really gained any bonus points in recent years, and now just up and quit rather than fulfilling her obligation to her state.
Maybe Palin got wind that Condi was thinking of running in 2012, and Condi would clean the floor with her.
Either way, she might as well just go fishing for the next decade or so.
That’s the end of her presidential aspirations.

austinMemberQuitters never win.
July 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm #671274
JoBParticipantaustin…
actually.. quitting was the tactic she used to catapult herself into the governor’s mansion… and she did that for the good of the Alaskan people too.
i wonder what will be revealed in the next few weeks or months that will give her the bump she is looking for… condemning others for something that basically occurred on her watch.
She is a wily devil.. so i wouldn’t count her out yet.
Not knowing enough to be President wasn’t an impediment to George junior…
July 4, 2009 at 5:56 pm #671275
austinMemberFair enough, she did drop out of school four or five times before finally graduating as well.
July 5, 2009 at 7:26 am #671276
bluebirdMemberI agree with Alki_2008:
“I would guess that she’s going into the private sector for something more lucrative”
I think it’s as simple as an offer from FOX news that is too good to pass up, and being tired of all the harassment (justified or not).
July 5, 2009 at 3:32 pm #671277
JoBParticipantshe wouldn’t need PAC money for a job in the private sector and her PAC is still accepting donations
