luckymom30ParticipantWhere can you buy natural cat litter or better yet how do you make your own?
December 4, 2009 at 10:31 pm #683361
raindance42MemberCostco carries a natural cat litter, at least they did several months ago. Of course, there's also the question of what is really meant when the package says "natural"–not sure how much difference there is between a mass-produced "natural" product and the regular stuff.
I also spotted a pet supply store in the Junction today. I think it was called Next to Nature. Did not go inside, so I can't vouch for them personally, but it might be what you're looking for.

luckymom30ParticipantThanks! I will check it out!

GenHillOneParticipantNext to Nature, Mud Bay, Pet Elements, Pet Pros, Petco – All the Best Pet Care, RIP :( – even Safeway and Bartell now carry a couple of brands. Not hard to find. Making your own? Not for me, but more power to ya – check Google.

SEGMemberThe worlds best kitty litter is called "the worlds best kitty litter"!
You get it at next to nature. It's made of corn and dosnt stink at all. It is really good stuff!

CMPParticipantDon't bother with the pine stuff from Trader Joe's. My kitten didn't pee for a good eight hours with that stuff in her box. As soon as my Mom put in the clumping litter, she was back in business. FYI, she was pet-sitting, I don't live at home with my parents!

LenaParticipantSeconding the World's Best Cat Litter. It is expensive but lasts for a long time. We buy ours from Amazon Fresh or Mud Bay.

celeste17ParticipantTeri from Furry Faces introduced me to wood pellets. They come in a big bag and as the cats use it the pellets break down and absorb the odors and clump.

hammerheadParticipantHere is what I do. Right now I have about 25 cats including my own. I line my litter boxes with newspaper and use crown littler. It is recycled newspaper pellets(also comes as good mews). Now the difference between and those of your who only have 1-3 cats maybe LOL. I dump my litter every morning and pick poop out in the afternoons. I HATE clumping litter personally. When people come into our house the first thing people say is how many cats do you have? They are always amazed that my house doesn't STINK! Wood pellets are fine too.
So coming from a person with alot of cats:) MEOW

WSBKeymaster2 indoor cats, and we buy huge bags of Good Mews at Safeway or Fred Meyer. Recycled pulp product.

dhgParticipantArm & Hammer now has a corn product you can pick up at Targets. We've been using that for about 4 weeks now and its okay. I'm with raindance42 on the use of the word natural. Arsenic is natural, doesn't mean it's good for you.

me on 28th Ave SWParticipantI just did a trial run of World’s Best Cat litter, and while I loved it (no dust!) none of my cats would even enter the clean box with the new litter. Instead they doubled-up on our other litter box with the old kind. I’m not willing to risk four angry cats (and the potential potty payback) by switching both boxes, so my loss could be your gain. Is anyone out there wanting my 1)8# of unused kitty litter bagged up and 2) a brand-new 8# unopened bag of the same litter? I would have just returned the unopened bag, but one of my felines added insult to injury by using his teeth to puncture the top of the plastic bag multiple times in protest. I just don’t want to throw it away. 206-818-6483, please leave message if I don’t pick up.

dufusMemberNatural cat litter can be made by digging a hole in your yard and putting the dirt in your house, in a litter box, for the cat. Saves on wasteful packaging, saves fuel in transporting cat litter from factory to distributor to stores to your house, gives you good exercise digging, you might find some good fishing worms, your cat likes dirt for doing his/her duty. It is free. You can plant a tree in the hole.

service dog academyMemberwe have two cats in addition to the two dogs. we use swheat scoop. its a wheat cat litter that clumps and can be flushed down the drain. the best part about it though is that amazon fresh DELIVERS it to our house!
December 21, 2009 at 6:40 pm #683375
KimberleyParticipantFor those who use the “good” stuff, how have you or did you transition your cats from the old stuff to the new stuff? We have two cats in our house (not mine) and I’ve wanted to switch to a better litter, yet I’m told that there will be kitty pee pee payback (and possibly on my favourite pillow) if I try to switch their litter.
December 21, 2009 at 9:43 pm #683376
AlParticipantMy key to a successful transition? Slow and easy.
Combine a little of the new stuff with alot of the old stuff and as you need to change the litter just keep adding a little more of the new and less of the old.
December 23, 2009 at 2:41 am #683377
SemeleParticipantWe use the “Litter Purrfect” from Costco and after trying everything, and I mean everything it works the best for us. Cats wouldn’t Swheat scoop or world’s best, and we have been happy with this stuff with our three cats. It’s also fairly cheap at $8.00 for 30lbs. It’s says it’s all natural which I am sure is relative, but hey, it works for us and the kitties.
December 23, 2009 at 4:46 am #683378
jschuMembertake an old cushion or couch pad and put vinegar or old dried shoe insoles. cats will mark it and pee on it- just leave outside.
December 23, 2009 at 10:06 pm #683379
2krazy4wordsParticipantSwheat Scoop Natural Wheat Litter is the BEST (imho) it is not only naturally clumping (the wheat starches) it is also flushable – the enzymes naturally biodegrade and eliminate odor. It is safe and non-toxic. Mud Bay has the best pricing on it (Mud Bay is the best for anything you want to know and try!) Pet Elements is good too (they’ve been trying to stay current to meet Mud Bay’s pricing). It is the only stuff my cats will use, and I’ve been using it in a multi-cat home for eons.
December 23, 2009 at 10:48 pm #683380
flowerpetalMemberSwheat Scoop can be purchased for less at Target then Mudbay… if you are bargain hunting.
December 23, 2009 at 11:00 pm #683381
GenHillOneParticipantI highly recommend seeing if you can “test smell” the Swheat Scoop before buying a large quantity. Those who don’t like it (myself included) seem to really hate it. I simply can’t stand the sweet smell combined with urine.
December 23, 2009 at 11:00 pm #683382
2krazy4wordsParticipantoh yeah, I forgot Target carries it now. My friend has also seen sales for the larger bags at PetCo (?)
December 24, 2009 at 1:39 am #683383
JulieMemberOn the transition: I’ve had good luck with the very gradual introduction of the new litter, plus a sprinkling of “Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract” litter. Generally the more set in their ways your cats are, the more gradually you want to introduce new ways to them. Sprinkle just a handful of the new litter with the old at first, plus a handful of the Cat Attract. When you next scoop, add another handful of the new, plus another sprinkling of Cat Attract. And so on. It takes a while, but you really, really want your cats to be happy with their litter!

JulieMemberA comment on “flushable” litters: last I heard there was still a concern that flushed cat feces might be a major source of parasites that contribute to the decline of sea otters:
