Why doesn’t everyone adopt from shelters?

I forgot to clarify, our dog is AKC cert., ut my points was, that doesn’t necessarily do anything to prove whether or not it’s a reputable breeder

I don’t breed dogs, but i think it simply means that the breeder has kept a registry of blood lines and registered the original breeding pair and every pup bred.

I think this is mostly done on an honor system. I honestly don’t know if breeders are checked out by the AKC or not.. and would like to know.

I would think buying a registered pup would increase your odds for a well bred dog… but i suspect that most of us don’t know enough about the blood lines to do much more than look at the certificates and nod.

That’s why i base my assessment of responsible breeders more on meeting them, seeing where the dogs are kept, meeting the breeding pair if possible, watching them handle their dogs, how much they want to know about me before turning a dog over to them and how they answer my questions.

We were all set to buy a couple of shiba pups from a breeder in Minnesota when the two we have now popped up on petfinder as rescues… so i interviewed a lot of shiba breeders.

Neither of the two breeders who registered my pups with AKC were responsible breeders. One dog has a known genetic defect that was not noted and she was sold intact to the first owner… she was neutered by the rescue organization. The other was neutered, but handed over at least 3 weeks too early as a neutered pup to a distant family member with no prior dog experience and no training when the breeder realized he was too large to breed the smaller more lucrative Shibas. Both are registered AKC.

I eventually identified both breeders, checked their reputations, spoke with one of them and wrote letters concerning what i discovered to the AKC. I did not receive any follow-up calls or letters from the AKC even though both dogs are registered… which is why i question their regulatory effect.

Sam-c, I too am stupid for my dogs:) And i sincerely hope that anyone who lives with our four legged friends of either the dog or cat variety find themselves stupid too…
