There is a place that neighbors can call. It is adult protective services and their phone number is 1-866-221-4909. If you go out on the the state website, http://www.dshs.wa.gov there is a section on this, including a category called “self neglect” which appears to be the category that your neighbor might fit in to. Adult protective services is basically an agency that handles people over 60 who lack functional or mental ability to take care of theselves. The self neglect piece is quite interesting. I hope you are able to help your neighbor and that this gives you a place to go.

if your neighbor isn’t over 60.. they should be able to tell you where you contact someone for those who are mentally compromised.

APS doesn’t only deal with those over 60, so it doesn’t matter what age your neighbor is. They will deal with any vulnerable adult, age isn’t a consideration.

If she owns her own home, you may be able to find out her last name by going to this link:

    http://www.metrokc.gov/gis/mapportal/PViewer_main.htm

You can find out if she has been involved with the legal system at this link:

A bit of information can help in your quest to get assistance for this woman. Likewise for NoName007. It might be worthwhile to speak with the homeowner if this is a rental. I would want neighbors to alert me if something similar were going on in one of my properties. Especially in the case of out-of-town owners, they don’t know what goes on and bad tenants are worse than no tenants at all. Unless it’s a teardown and they don’t care about the maintenance. You won’t know unless you try.

Well here’s the update to my crazy neighbor problem…

It’s taken a lot of phone tag to finally speak to a Adult Protective Service representative. There is nothing they can do for her at this point. I don’t know if she’s in their computer so they know her real age, but they do only help adults 60 and over. Frustrating…. The only thing APS could do was give me the phone number for Sound Mental Health, of all places. We’ll see if they have any leads on who to contact.

However, I have been able to find out more information about the property she lives on. The deed was just transfered to the name of her trust fund. I need to do more research about what that means.

If anyone has any more ideas out different avenues to try to get this lady some help, I would be grateful. Calling APS was one of the hardest phone calls I’ve ever made because I don’t want to turn my neighbor’s life upside down and comprimise my families safety.

Call Senior Information & Assistance @ 206-448-3110 and see if they think she may be eligible for a visit by the Geriatric Regional Assessment Team. They come out and do mental health assessments. If ahe doesn’t qualify for that program there is a Department at the City that can push for repairs if the house is dangerous. I&A will have that number too. Beyond that unfortunately for some folks…people have the right to make very bad decisions for themselves.
