Have you heard about Relay for Life?

Going on 11 years in our community, the Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. The relay is a chance for us to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back all those that have fought against this horrible disease and perhaps those we lost. The ACS has many great systems and services that are supported by the money we raise, much of it used right here in Seattle.

The even this year will be held June 18th at the West Seattle Stadium. It is a great community event for people of all ages – while our participants take turns on the track, there are games and fun and educational events going on for kids of all ages. The relay in our community has been growing over the years, and this year we hope you will join us!

I used to be on the board of the Redmond/Kirkland Relay for Life. For three years I busted my butt for corporate sponsorship money and filled the coffers of the ACS but then I found that only about 20% of all money goes to the actual cause as 80% went to overhead.

The Three Day is the same way as well as the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

It’s so frustrating.

velo…unfortunately, that is oh, too true at times. As a cancer survivor (5 years this past Jan. 11 – yay!)it’s frustrating, but I still remain happy that there is at least 20% getting to where it needs to go rather than 0%. I hope people don’t use it as an excuse to not support these programs anymore. That would be sad.

As the daughter of a cancer victim (my mother died of pancreatic cancer at age 62 in 1999), I have to say that you can’t quantify the value of awareness-raising. And of bringing people together. I covered Relay for Life last year, stopping by a few different times during the weekend, and it was extremely moving.

We’re sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience. Actually, Relay for Life events are charged with keeping their events at 10% overhead or below. The West Seattle Relay for Life is proud to say that it keeps expenses at 6% or below due to a group of AMAZING volunteers.

Jan, congrats. We are always looking for more survivors to come out and join us – our event is kicked off Celebrating your accomplishment by a ceremony, survivors lap and social. We would love if you would join us.
