    Hi everyone,

I am looking for some current recommendations for a gym or personal trainer in West Seattle (I am too lazy to drive over the bridge for a workout) I have already looked through the older posts for this topic, I did find some good info but am looking for more current reviews. I have already been a member of All-Star and 24hr Fitness so no further input is needed on those options. I am mostly curious about some of the newer small gyms that have cropped up around West Seattle in the past few years. (ex: Snap Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Fitness Together, Crossfit West Seattle…and any others I am not aware of). I tried checking for reviews on Yelp and CitySearch but most places had only 1 review.

(And yes, WSB, I have looked at links you provide for your sponsors, so no plugging necessary. ;) ) Basically I am interesting in personal experiences from people that have actually been to the gyms/trainers.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to your replies. :)

    What is your goal?

Fitness, weight loss, tone, athletic goals, strength training?

The only way to truly benefit from paying for a gym membership is to set a goal BEFORE looking for the gym. Then folks could give you better recommendations on your narrowed search.

Truly, I would have to say the trainers at the West Seattle “Y” totally rock. At other places it seems like they are so worried about their “image”, whether it’s a guy or girl walking by or working with you…they seem to be worried first about impressing someone. To that end, I’ll wave this red flag for you…make sure to ask for their credentials, are they “internally” certified or are the nationally accredited. I “believe” everyone is nationally accredited at the West Seattle “Y”. Wherever you go, ask that question. Then do your research from there…

2 words – Alki XGym. Been going there since August and I love it! It’s a kick ass workout but I’m in and out in 20 minutes and I’ve honestly never felt stronger. They are very friendly and work with people of all sizes/ages. Not for the weak minded :)

Check them out. I think they are running some crazy special right now too like 4 sessions for 25 bucks. I don’t know if it’s too late but it’s worth it to get in a few sessions at that price.

Thanks nuni and AlkiBeach for the tips. :)

So some additional info about my goals: While I am looking to lose weight, my primary goal is to just get fit really. I occasionally run (not fast) but am not very consistent with my routine, therefore never see any real results. This is why I think having a trainer might help me to stay focused. Years ago I went to a trainer in Belltown and I loved it but work schedules got in the way of keeping my appointments. Now I have a lot more time to dedicate to myself. Obviously price is important to me but I am not afraid of paying more for something that will work (and yes, I do know that fitness programs only work if you put in the time and effort)

How do most people use a personal trainer? Just to get them going then you are on your own? How much does one usually cost?

DMH – XGym has a completely different method for training and I think you’d probably enjoy it. You can look it up by googling xgym. When I went in the first time they gave me a free session to try it out. I would recommend this.

Definitely check out Fitness Together. The guys and gals who train here are all great. You work out in your own space with only the trainer, so there’s no distractions, waiting for machines, etc. They keep detailed track of your progress and provide you with regular reports, offer nutritional counseling, and are always finding new ways to motivate. They always offer a free first session to try them out and usually have some specials running. Super-convenient location, too. Good luck!

I have the name of a great trainer if you’re still looking for one! Has worked for 24 hour fitness and Allstar and is now starting up a personal training business!!

I agree with Keith – check out Fitness Together. I have been going for about 5 months and have seen great results. They are very knowledgeable, and great at keeping you motivated, and keeping the workouts interesting.

I highly recommend Pricilla Bell. Her company is Bell Curve and she is also a trainer at the All Star Fitness gym here in West Seattle. I take 2 of her classes and I am in better shape because of it. Check out her website: http://www.bellcurvebootcamp.com

I was a member at 24hr fitness for several years then was a member at all star for the past 2-3 years. I’m now with Anytime and it is great. It has everything I need. The price is right, it’s open 24/7, there are hardly any people there, and there are no used car salesmen. Being 3 blocks from my house is a bonus too.

I also want to recommend Fitness Together. I have never been a workout person and finally bit the bullet and signed up for this place. I have seen fantastic, very positive results in the last 8 weeks and have never worked out so hard in my life nor would I keep it up if I only saw the trainer a few times and then went on my own. If you need motiviation and tailored workouts, this place is for you!

I have been a member of Snap Fitness since they opened and really love it there. I have not used any of the trainers there, however, so cannot comment on them. I don’t like group classes, so Snap works well for me since they don’t have them. Well, they do have some boot camp groups from time to time that you can join (extra cost) with a trainer, but I haven’t looked into them. I like that it’s open 24/7 (with a keycard) and that the membership has no contracts. It’s clean, well-maintained, and I have never waited for a machine, even at the busiest times of the day. You can get a free trial week before you join too. http://snapfitness.com/seattlewest

I also went to Fitness Together for about 6 months. It was an incredible workout and it helped get me back on track.
