Yes, Smitty, that is very true. In point of fact, you’re supposed to take the pill for at least a month before relying on it to prevent conception, since what it’s doing is changing the hormone levels in your body to essentially fool it into “thinking” it’s already pregnant. This is why women on the pill don’t ovulate, generally speaking (there are exceptions, but I’m trying to be brief). It’s not like you can pop a pill and then go have sex and assume you won’t get pregnant.

As far as insults go, I don’t use crude terms for genitalia of either sex as insults, because I happen to think that they are lovely, fun things that ought not be used as derogatory terms. But it’s quite clear that Rush meant to be insulting, and I can’t help thinking he’s enjoying the disapprobation he’s getting from both sides. The guy feeds on ugliness and that’s the problem I’ve always had with him.

TDe: the problem I’m increasingly having with public political discourse at any level in this country is that if you say ANYTHING someone disagrees with, they respond with an entirely disproportionate level of vitriol, which the media then churns into a frenzy. Neither end of the political spectrum has a lock on this, for sure.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, free speech, yadda yadda. But I can’t help thinking that the purpose of such vitriol is less to express oneself freely than to intimidate others into not doing so. Ugh.

This is why I’ve pretty much turned off the news till November.

Rush wasn’t happy just going after Ms Fluke.

Now he is going after Maria Cantwell for publicly stating that it is in really bad taste to call women names like that in public.

    he may be losing sponsors

but it doesn’t appear he has learned anything yet

Dobro when you step up to a microphone, for a national audience… and rest assured that was Pelosi’s intent… you become a public figure. It was NOT congressional testimony,… it was a Pelosi called extracongressional political stunt, This was a very smart, politically savvy Georgetown student.. this was not ambush journalism But the point is a good one, Here’s a novel idea… neither one them was a gentleman. Not to worry JoB.. his ratings will determine if advertisers come…. he probably got out of a sponsor contract and will charge more for the next client. Maybe in YOUR house JoB…. but I am a big boy .,, I don’t have to ask permission to spend money.

Yo Datamuse…you turn off the news yet still read internet forum opinions?

    Masochism, I say!

Lots of examples of the trend to decide whether to take offense or defend based first on who the speaker is. Do I find it offensive for public figure X to call a citizen a ‘slut’ on national airwaves? Well, who said it? Oh, THAT X? Well then, X is a jerk/is right!

Or, if you land on the “X is right” square, you also try to find a parallel example of when public figure Y did something similar as a means of defending X, even though your Grandma tried to tell you a thousand times a year that two wrongs do not make a right (ignoring the fact that the two instances are pretty clearly different).

Discourse in America: as bad as the public school systems. Coincidence? Sure…believe that and go watch American Idle.

odroku, you actually know me in real life so you can form your own opinion of whether I’m a masochist or not. ;)

I find this topic amazingly fascinating. I just spent the weekend with two women (among other folks as well). Both were generally thoughtful, well informed people. Both would consider themselves feminists. One of them was abe to focus on certain words and phrases with regard to a woman or women in general through a lens of logic and on a case by case basis. The other was quick to jump to the “that’s such a misogynist viewpoint to take…how dare you.” This did nothing to further the conversation what-so-ever. (I’ll spare you the details of the conversation for everyone’s sake).

I bring this up because I too consider myself to be a feminist and a man, and have a hard time hearing certain words being used in a public forum where there is no background into personalities and personal beliefs to give perspective. I also believe public forums are rarely the appropriate time (if ever) to use such harsh words.

On that note let me be very clear… F&*K Rush Limbaugh.

Now, the question…Is there no such thing as an appropriate time to use the “C-Word” ? Is there never a person who deserves this title?

I certainly think there is. I’m curious to know why some of you think otherwise.

Easy with the printed words DBP. There are kids who browse these forums and really don’t need to be turned on to the words of that literature just yet in their young lives. They’ll be adults soon enough and then more power to them and their reading choices. My opinion only.

    Re.: POST # 38:

Just curious, how many parents reading the W.S. Blog Forum allow their “kids” to browse the forum?

My apologies. Those profanities should not have seen the light of day. (edit now that I’m home and on a larger screen) And since this discussion had gotten to the point where somebody felt the need to use those words, I’m closing it.

I didn’t think there was anyone unaware that WSB is a PG site. Not PG-13. PG. And a mild PG at that. PLEASE honor that. – TR

I am personally acquainted with 3 kids who browse from time to time, looking for interesting forum topics. Two in early high school (they’ve probably heard of more than I have these days) and one in early middle school (I’m more concerned about her). I suspect their parents don’t have a clue.

And if anyone has ever seen anything beyond “damn” and “hell” in here, PLEASE flag us. If you are not signed in and therefore not seeing “report this post,” e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com. I’m now going to have to take time away from news coverage to search the entire database.
