JiggersMemberLet’s find out WTF is going on to the property where the Rocksport was who shared the land with a number of other businesses that where in the Junction. Its been over a year now since its been bought out with no demolition or progress in sight. Its devaluing the immediate community where businesses could be thriving. West Seattle’s already been thru the “Hole” fiasco, and now, I’m afraid that this particular piece of valuable land will be dormant for two plus years. Did we fall back into a recession? It looks runned down and horrible when you drive past it. At least we see some action going on with the former Petco site.

gmabettyParticipantLast I knew the contract was sold to another developer with agreement to stick with original plans. Don’t remember the last start date given.
Removing asbestos is a touchy job for those doing it. Strict regulations for doing so.
I see there is work going on down in “the hole” finally.

Betty, do you mean another developer bought it from Equity Residential, which bought it in December 2011 from Conner, who had owned it from years, or do you mean Equity (which is still the owner of record, and has had a demolition permit since October)? Just checking. Rumors continue to swirl re: why it hasn’t gone anywhere, but the company has ceased commenting.

gmabettyParticipantAll I know is we had the company announce their plan and worked with the neighborhood with their complaints and then it was sold. Someone asked me the other day why all the businesses left that block and no new ones. They didn’t know what is planned.

I thought that city knew how to get stuff done. while we were canceling fireworks due to terrorist fears they were building millennium park. guess things don’t apply when you’ve got another city by the balls. is there no law that prevents a company from buying a property and then siting on it for years? seems the adage ‘use it or lose it’ should apply. you get a certain amount of time to do something or you’re forced to sell. residents have a right to know why the heart of their community has turned into a garbage pit.

WSBKeymasterNo, there is no law against holding onto a property for years. If anything on the site breaks code about safety/nuisance, it can be reported for a violation, but no, there is no law against a building being vacant. “The Hole” sat fallow for almost five years (albeit under two different ownerships, with a court fight in the middle) before construction resumed a month ago. Demolition/construction permits do have an expiration date – but they can be extended.

JanSParticipantit’s got a fence around it now, I believe. No one even paying to park there…
