jwwsParticipantreally??? you blithely walked them as they went into everyone’s yard and did not heed your calls yet when asked where their leashes were, per the law you just laughed and went on. what if they ran into traffic, would you be so glib? what if they encountered a larger on leash dog that went after them or caused someone walking to have an accident? It is beyond me why some dog owners feel the law does not apply to them and their dogs. Full disclosure I am a dog owner and always walk on leash and scoop. Just don’t understand the stupid off leash mentality.

BreezyParticipantAgree. Just two days ago, an off-leash dog in one of our nearby parks came running after my hubs and I while we were walking our 2 dogs. The owner casually called to it, but it just kept barking and engaging our dogs in verbal fighting. I’m sick and tired of loose dogs! I used to enjoy my walks but now am always scanning the areas around us for loose canines and their selfish owners. ugh

JoBParticipantBreezy..
you nailed the problem for responsible dog owners on the head. We can’t walk our dogs without fear that we will encounter an irresponsible dog owner and have to manage an unwanted interaction on our own.
i literally am unable to walk my dogs right now because of irresponsible dog owners.
I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery and could handle my two well trained dog’s leashes with my left hand.. but i need the right to handle any kind of altercation and using it in an emergency would likely re-injure the shoulder i just had surgery on.
it makes me cringe that the same people who self righteously say other dog owners should walk their dogs more blithely walk out of their gate with their leash looped in their hand and their dog running free.. as though carrying a leash complies with the law.
not getting to walk even around our block saddens both the pups and I… but even in the best possible circumstances, our walks are always restricted to times and places where we face the least risk from other owners who feel their right to amble along watching their pet run is more important than either the law or the rights of others.

BreezyParticipantsmokey, is that spray available online or brick-n-mortar stores?

Genesee HillParticipantNo, JoB. As much as I would like to say: ‘Spray away’. I will have to say no. It is probably not legal. But, I am relatively sober now. Ask me later in the evening…lol…

BreezyParticipantJoB, some of us may not be very good shooters so there may be some overspray onto owners….;)

JoBParticipantgenesee hill..
well i wouldn’t use it on dogs
it’s not their fault their owners are irresponsible
Breezy..
i once could say that i always hit my target
but truth told i have been doing very little target practice lately
the way my hands shake lately a general i f.rt in your general direction would probably be a more accurate assessment of my aim ;->
LOL.. lately that has been a weapons capable assault in itself :))))
ok.. i am guilty of old lady humor… and laughing at my own joke so much i can barely type.. but i can see it now..
“officer.. she turned her back on me” ;-0

The Velvet BulldogParticipantWhile walking/training our foster dog (who is NOT great on the leash) we got charged by an off-leash dog. I yelled at the kid to “Get your dog!” He said, “But she’s really friendly.” I said, “It’s not your dog, it’s MY dog.” And because our foster dog can’t tell the difference between an aggressive approach and a friendly one, they got into it. Both the kid and I were on the ground trying to pull them apart. I told the kid to “put your dog on a damn leash,” and you know what? Now he walks his dog on a leash.

CaitParticipantI have never heard an argument for why it WOULD be OK to have your dog off leash in a non-off-leash area. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it attempted and I cannot think of any possible reason that one could justify it. You all touched on some great viewpoints here. Sure you MIGHT be able to predict your dog, but a dog on a leash who is approached by your dog could get uncharacteristically aggressive. So why do people do it in DROVES? I DON’T GET IT!
May 20, 2013 at 2:16 pm #790234
anonymeParticipantCait: they do it because they CAN.
It has absolutely nothing to do with logic, which is why it’s a waste of breath to argue with these people, or to try and understand them. Animal control needs to dump their do-nothing policy and start handing out hefty fines the first time, every time. Until there are consequences, there will be no change.

GoGoParticipantA woman that lives on my street is always out in the street with her two dogs. Apparently she is “training” them to come when she calls them. Why she can’t do this in her own yard is beyond me. I, too, am a dog owner and always have my dogs on leashes and don’t understand why some people think the law doesn’t apply to them.

JoBParticipantanonyme..
i don’t think it’s a waste of time…
at one time i walked my well behaved well trained akita/shepherd off leash never considering the danger i put her in or the trauma of those who were frightened by the fact that she was not leashed.
i knew that she and i were in control.. but i didn’t think of other people and pets who weren’t.
one leashed aggressive dog with an untrained owner and a little education changed all of that for me.
now i wouldn’t dream of walking any pet in public unleashed.
yes, there are some people who are simply arrogant … or enjoy intimidating others with their dogs…
but some people are still simply uneducated as to the possible consequences of their actions..
while fines might make people more careful where and how they flout the law.. they don’t educate.
we do.

Georgia MomMemberHaven’t had any success trying to speak nicely to an off leash dog owner – have met some terribly rude and aggressive people. I have been cursed at and threatened. Have felt my child was in danger several times from dogs running around – she has even had one come after her that the owner grabbed. Have tried contacting Animal Control without any success. It’s sad that I have worry about our safety at a park or even beach, all because of the sense of entitlement these people feel.

sam-cParticipantself entitled dog owners treat sooooo much of West Seattle as their personal off-leash dog space.
last Thursday, my husband took our dog (an on-leash pug) and son on a walk in the nice and amazing greenbelt paths over behind Pathfinder elementary. while they were walking, a bull terrier (like the Target dog) came flying down the path, alone, off-leash. the dogs were just looking at eachother when the bull terrier jumped our pug and had him pinned from above. the dog had his jaw around our pug’s neck before his owner showed up and got him off. luckily no damage was done, but I’d hate to think of our 5 year old seeing his dog mauled.
I hate it when people treat community resources like these trails as their personal off leash, backyard. watch out for these jerks. the owner of this dog was a 20-something guy.

PeacevineMemberI think people should do what’s right for them, and be forced to suffer the consequences with eternal fire and damnation for their ignorance of the laws of man…just a thought. Sometimes those things pass. You know….thoughts. hahahaha!

PeacevineMemberOn a more serious note, I do agree that pet owners should try not to be so oblivious of what your pet is doing, and it’s surroundings. You wouldn’t take your child around a place like say the “catwalk” downtown at 3am, or drugstore alley with you to buy some drugs from a gangster thug, right? Don’t walk your dog off leash where it’s not safe for your pet or other pets and you know others may be disturbed by it. I’m not sure why that’s such a big deal. Have common sense. Listen to that song called Common Sense by John Prine. It’s a goodie. Might even give you a reason to smile.

JKBParticipantYep. Friday night I met two dogs on my way home. The first was a pug running loose, that aggressively charged at me barking and growling. Owner turned up – a full block away – did nothing, and eventually the pug ran down a side street. I hope one of them got run over.
The other was a couple out walking their two large dogs. On leashes, and when I passed by they made sure the dogs were under control. Seemed pretty well-behaved animals, actually. Compliments to these people for doing the right thing.
