JanSParticipantI have had both of my hips replaced in the last 6 years. I was back up and working (massage) about 3 1/2 weeks after surgery. Make sure she does any exercises that the doc says to – on a regular basis. It definitely makes recovery easier. Make sure that there’s a plastic bag on the car seat – it makes it much easier to get in and out. Have a good walker for use at home right after surgery. The rest is pretty straight forward. Your mom will be so glad to be out of pain. Too many people are afraid to do it. It’s really wonderful and freeing, to be able to walk without pain again.
I wish her luck with her surgery. :) If you have any specific questions, ask. I’ll answer as well as I can !

cclarueMemberJan , Thank you so much. I can’t wait for her to be without this pain. My mom has always lived in hi speed and is now operating at a snails pace and it is so hard to see her suffer. Three weeks to working is so impressive!!! Where did you have your surgery?

JanSParticipantI had my first one done at Virginia Mason, the second at UW Med. Center. Both times they had me up and out of bed the day after surgery. They want you to be able to function, albeit slowly. And they work with you about how to negotiate stairs, curbs, etc. That was imperative for me, since I live in a second floor apartment.
They also show you how to get in and out of the shower, and other things that you usually do. One of the things that I found most helpful in the beginning was to have a raised toilet seat. If you can get your hands on one, I’d advise it. And, faithfully wear the compression stocking if they give her one. Definitely helps with swelling.
After about 3 weeks, I was really eager to get on with things. To do it without pain after being in pain for so long was wonderful.

charlabobParticipantCC — I had hip replacement 2-1/2 years ago and am gleefully awaiting a new knee in August. I’d be happy to send you (and your mom) e-mail. It was a huge relief and went absolutely smoothly! It was also the first time in too many years that I heard the phrase, “Since you’re so young ….” Apparently many people wait until their 70’s or 80’s to get it done. :-) charla at charla dot com. Bottom line: she’ll be SO happy!

oddrealityParticipantMy mom had her first one done when she was 87 , the second when she was 89.She was lucky she had only been having pain for a couple of years. After surgery she had zero pain except from her incisions and that was minor. She did really well . Most people do exceptionally well after hip surgeries.I’ve heard knees are worse.
Good luck to your mom.

WorldCitizenParticipantMy father in law had both hips replaced in the last 2 years. My only advice is to be vigilant about the rehab process and to lose as much weight before the surgery as possible. It will ease the stress on the joints and make rehab more successful. Seriously, if overweight at all, this is one of the most important times to commit to a drastic diet program to knock off pounds quick.

AlkiDebbieParticipantMy doctor has told me I may need a hip replacement within a years. Everyone I’ve talked to says they didn’t have any complications and best of all the pain was gone. Best of luck to your mom cclarue.

argilesParticipantI work for an orthopedics office and one of the things that we suggest to our patients is to visit a total joint seminar at the hospital your having it done at. I know that Highline Medical Center has one. It’s a seminar about what to expect and what will happen after your new joint replacement.
Joint replacements have come along way, so glad that your mother will be getting a new hip. Like JanS said make sure to do the exercises. If you don’t do the exercises you’ll become stiff and it will be harder to regain the movement.

JanSParticipantargiles…yes, the class is very educational. Definitely something to consider. You even get to pass around an artificial hip. :)
