luckymom30ParticipantI know some of you may suggest shooting the bird, but we would like to remove the bird (a rae woodpecker) from the roof our of friends condo and transport it to a safe place where-ever that maybe. My friend has contacted someone who works with wildlife and they have told her it is in it’s domain and should not be removed, however it is making so much noise the people who live in the condos are having a very hard time sleeping, etc…

Woodpeckers are amazing, beautiful birds. Perhaps a few plastic owls on the roof will persuade this bird to go elsewhere.
“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” ~Immanuel Kant
“The measure of a society can be how well its people treat its animals.” ~Mohandas Gandhi
“We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.”—Albert Schweitzer, The Philosophy of Civilization

luckymom30ParticipantYes Velo-nut I do know what you would do! That is a no-brainer! :)

luckymom30ParticipantMy friend and her husband have placed several colorful helium balloons and other plastic birds but the woodpecker will not leave. The noise is so loud I thought someone’s washing machine was overloaded the woodpecker was really banging around on the roof!

herongrrrlParticipantI’m guessing you meant “rare” woodpecker, and that the bird in question is a Northern Flicker (http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Flicker/lifehistory) who is drumming to attract a mate. Maybe on something metal, because it’s so much louder than wood, and apparently the loudest sound attracts the best mate? It’s getting to be that time of year…
FWIW, if it is a flicker, they really aren’t very rare. Once you learn their call, you’ll hear that they are all over the place…but they are still protected, and even if they weren’t it would be illegal to shoot them inside city limits.
Here’s some info from a Colorado-based bird control company that might be useful: http://www.adamsbirdcontrol.com/documents/Flicker_WP_25Feb08.pdf
Good luck! They are gorgeous birds, but this particular practice of theirs can be crazymaking, for sure.

pigeonmomParticipantOops. Nevermind.

luckymom30ParticipantYes I meant rare, sorry! The guy from the wildlife place said it was a rare woodpecker, I can’t remember offhand the exact name he had for this bird.
And Velo-nut! You so sound like my husband, he too has a wild and carzy sense of humor. :)

EmmyJaneParticipantMy family had this problem growing up with cedar siding. We got an inflatable owl to scare it away…. which subsequently deflated and whipped against the house in the wind, sounding ironically like the woodpecker pecking against the house.
We finally got vinal siding.
