I worked for UW Extension Summer Youth Programs for nine years:

The Summer Day program is an all-day blend of art, drama, science, swimming, and writing, held on the UW campus. It’s popular and tends to fill up really fast, so if you are interested, stay on top of the deadlines.

Cinnamon, New Resident….you might also check with some of the community centers. I live near Hiawatha Comm. Center in the Admiral District. I know they have a lot of summer programs, though not sure about Spring Break. A problem is that not all schools (private vs. public) do Spring Break at the same time.

I think the Seattle Parks Dept. has something to do with the summer fun…

    Also…maybe get a subscription to Seattle’s Child

magazine…usually has a wealth of information in it…

and, new res…I think rdmac was just making a suggestion…it didn’t seem like bashing to me, but I guess (as we have found out in the past) people see things differently sometimes.

I’m sorry that you’re on the defensive now..politics and religion..probably 2 topics that should be tiptoed around – lol…hope you find some fun things for your daughter…

Um, really, Jan? Not very intuitive are you? Also, where was religion EVER discussed? Yeah, get a grip, West Seattle Bloggers, NOT EVERYONE SEES THINGS AS YOU DO! or HAS THE SAME OPINIONS!! I don’t know if you all can handle that, but it doesn’t seem to be working out for you! Do you people function in the real world? I have no idea how!

I was not bashing YOU or anyone else NewRes. Point out to me one place where I “criticized your parenting.” You asked for a sugesstion and I offered one. If my child was in town from out of state I know I would want to spend as much time with them as I could. And all Jan was saying is that religion and politics are usually 2 issues to stay away from because they can often cause arguements and misunderstanding.

YOU bash people and call them ignorant for disagreeing with YOU! Remember “NOT EVERYONE SEES THINGS AS YOU DO! or HAS THE SAME OPINIONS!!”

Guys, I need to step in here. We obviously keep a little more distance from the forums than from comments on the main page. But the intent here is not to have anything devolve into no more than a Stranger-style or HorsesAss.org-style back-and-forth. That is not what WSB is about, either the forums or the main page. And without saying any more, because we generally do not divulge the information we are privy to via administrative privilege, I have to say that the assumptions some of you seem to be making about some participants are not necessarily true. At any rate, I would like to not have to make rules and regulations regarding the tone of discussion, which you then will of course decide if you want to abide by or want to take your business elsewhere. So far, the most serious action I’ve had to take wrt the forums is deleting user accounts for obvious spammers, and I’m hopeful that’s as heavyhanded as I’ll ever have to get. So I’ll say it now: I’m not running a complete free-for-all, and I’d like you all to respect that. Also a terminology correction for someone who said this somewhere in this thread. You are not a BLOGGER if you are in a forum or leaving a comment on a blog. The blogger is the person who writes the main content for the blog. That would be me, for this particular website, anyway. Just a point of accuracy. You can have your own blog somewhere and be a blogger, but posting in a forum is not “blogging.” Thanks.

Hello mr. lowmanbeach. You must have been referring to my comment, about thin skins in your last few sentences. I knew that, about the blogging, what a blog is, etc…. I should have said, thin skins do not do well in making responses to blog entries, or in forums. Sorry! But thin skins do not do well in interpersonal communication online in general, because one cannot see the body language, the eyes, the tone, the look in the eyes. My question really is this: was it that comment that caused you to step in? or the earlier comments?

    You said:

I don’t exactly understand. Sorry, I am not trying to be impertinent! I would honestly like to know what is OK and what is not OK. I would very much like to follow the rules. You’ve done a fabulous job, and the last thing I would ever want to do is get on the wrong side of you and Tracy.

Cinnamon, new resident, lattemom, you are not the only ones who have posted comments here only to come back and see a response that may hurt your feelings. It’s happened to many people. Maybe you should take a minute to reread and edit (if necessary) what you write instead of hastily hitting ‘send post’. It’s just good practice in general, whether you are commenting on a blog or sending a work email since you can’t take back what you wrote.

On the topic post, I don’t have kiddos, but the Seattle Parks Department seems to always have cool stuff going on for the younger set. I would check out their website since they have shorter activities which still leaves a lot of free time in the day to explore the city. You could also get an entertainment book since there are tons of coupons in there for fun activities (ice-skating, Safeco/Qwest Field tours, go-cart racing, etc…).

    Hey M:

Thanks for the suggestions even though you don’t have children, that is nice of you! I have not gotten my feelings hurt here so please do not worry about me, I was though concerned about NewResident telling too much personal information as that is not a wise decision on a online forum no less. We have an entertainment book and we do alot of the things like ice skating, roller skating, visit the Parks, Seattle Center activites, Children’s Theater annual family memberships, Odyssey Museum and also the Pacific Science Center. Last year our youngest daughter who is 8 went to 2 day camps at the Science Center, they were a success but this year we are looking for another option just not an overnight camp just yet. I hear the YMCA has great camps but would still like to find other options. If anyone knows of an art camp for kids please let me know as we have an artist in residence.

I have nothing I want to take back that I have written and posted so sorry can’t help you there.

cinnamon…this is a link to things all over seattle this month for kids…most give what age group it’s appropriate for. They list these things every month in their calendar…maybe something on here for your daughter? I noticed there are some things at Camp Long…

there is also a great book on things to do in seattle with children. i know it’s good because i bought it to find things to do with grandbabies… one of whom is in that age range.

i did memberships at the aquarium (great spring break and summer programs) and the science center (i really enjoyed the butterfly enclosure) .. and if i didn’t have one teen i would do the children’s museum. my next will be to the zoo.. and you get a discount there if you have an aquarium membership.

another fun thing is the seattle pass… where you get three – 7 days of all that seattle has to offer for one price. that works with young kids with short attention span… it is too much for me but a flight attendant should have no trouble keeping up. and it is a good way to get an overview of what’s available. you save a lot of money on memberships that way:)

New Resident.. because of a series of circumstances including chronic illness… i was the visiting parent with my children… and i was and still am a good parent. you can ask them:)

JoB: Thanks so very much for all the inforamtion you have provided me as well as everyone who will read this blog posting! I had not heard of the Seattle Pass, great idea. Our family practically lives at the Seattle Center and we found the day camps at the Science Center to be alot of fun. Your grandchildren are sure lucky to have a grandparent like you.

And a thank you to JanS for providing the link for the art camp, with all this information we are sure to have an amazing time this Summer and during the breaks. Thanks to all.
