Tell American Public Media to stop carrying Monsanto’s greenwashed message in its programs! APM produces many shows carried by NPR affiliates such as KUOW, and some of their shows are now sponsored by Monsanto. Here’s the message that runs during Marketplace:

“Marketplace is supported by Monsanto, committed to sustainable agriculture, creating hybrid and biotech seeds designed to increase crop yields and conserve natural resources. Learn more at ProduceMoreConserveMore.com.”

If you know anything about Monsanto, you know that this message is very misleading. I know times are tough, but it’s also important for APM to know that its listeners don’t appreciate being patronized in such a way.

Go to this link to submit your disapproval to APM. It’s a form letter, you just attach your own info – or you can clear the form and write a more personal message.

What’s the background on all of this? I don’t know about Monsanto’s “dealings” other than they are the makers of RoundUp and other herbicides. Also, their genetically engineered seed to be some herbicide specific resistant. Thanks for the background!

Thanks for letting us know SarahScoot! I just finished reading a book about GE food and the role Monsanto plays in that field so this was a timely reminder. I never paid much attention to those ads on NPR until I finished the book (The Unhealty Truth by Robyn O’Brien) and I was surprised that NPR would allow these somewhat misleading statements. Monsanto does create hybrid and biotech seeds, but it’s to the detriment of others, creating higher rates of food allergies in children.

It was an interesting read that opened my eyes, but I’ll take it with a grain of salt, since it was written by an emotional mother. I only say that b/c she didn’t have the most logical opinions on intellectual property. However, changing the diet of her children that were suffering from food allergies (soy, eggs, dairy) yielded results so there’s something to be said about genetically engineered food and how it affects us. And you can blame Monsanto for that.

Coincidentally, I just saw “Food, Inc.” yesterday, which included a lengthy segment on how Monsanto is suing farmers for saving their own seeds (which have now become contaminated with Monsanto’s patented genes even though that’s not the seed these farmers planted). It was really disgusting. Thanks for the heads-up, SarahScoot!

Good Vanity Fair article on Monsanto

One of the most evil companies out there in my opinion, for more reasons than one.
