On a quest to find a Rheumatologist that I can actually get an appointment with. Waiting 2-3 months for a 10 minute pat down is just not working for me. Currently, I am seeing a Rheumatologist at Harborview since the UW is not accepting new patients at this time. Any suggestions?

I think when I was at Swedish on Cal Ave last week I saw something about a new Rheumatologist coming on board there. Worth checking out….206-320-3399

Dr. Naila B. Ahmad at Minor and James. My wonderful wife sees her. Through the Swedish Hospital System. Wait times did not seem unreasonable. Initial visit will require some forms being filled out.

Good Luck. Sorry you have that illness.

Dr. Carl Brodie – he’s in Factoria, so a bit of a trek, but he has his own infusion center on site, and lab on site, so it’s a one-stop trip.

He is kind, caring, and more importantly, he BELIEVES THE PATIENT when you tell him about your symptoms. He didn’t blow me off when I told him the odd combination of symptoms I had — he simply said that sometimes autoimmune diseases have unusual overlaps. I am his third patient with an atypical Lupus + Ankylosing Spondylitis “hybrid.”

He trusts me to manage my own daily medications, within guidelines. I no longer have to hoard my last anti-inflammatory because I had to take two on a bad day. He prescribes enough so I can take what I need, when I need, as long as I keep him posted on what I’m taking and how much. He was careful to write down and go over the medications with me so I understood clearly how much is ok on a bad day, how much is too much, and if I’m taking more than X amount per day for longer than X days, even though it’s within limits, to call him and let him know because it means something we’re doing isn’t working well enough.

Lastly, his approach is all about feeling as good as possible while minimizing any side effects. He had me set my goal — if 100% is perfect health, and 0% is dead, where am I, and what is “good enough,” and lastly, what is my ideal. I told him I was at 65% and that 80% was good enough, but 90-95 is my goal. He said, ok, let’s get you there.

The only drawback is I don’t love his nurse. She’s hard to get a call back from at times, and is a little bit difficult. However, he’s such a hands-on doctor that you don’t have to interact with her much.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. It is so frustrating when you hurt everyday and it takes months to get an appointment.
