I’m interested in having Dungeness Valley Creamery do a raw milk drop-off in West Seattle. I’ll volunteer my house for the drop-point. Their milk is $8.25/gallon and $4.20/half-gallon.

    Anybody interested?

You mean no pasteurization? Why not? Gets rid of all “germs” that could come from a cow….

Holy cow that is a bit pricey! (sorry I had to say that). Maybe if enough people were interested we could buy a cow and rotate her around to each garden. 6-7 gallons each day (not sure if that includes the cream, yummy), maybe have 30 houses involved for 1-2 gallons a week. No mowing the lawn plus you get fertilizer (or door to door sales person or politican repellant). Hand milking should be fairly sanitory. We could keep track of who did the milking just in case (no lawyers, politicans or bankers would be allowed to milk). Milking her and moving her from lawn to lawn would be good exercise. Plus the exercise for her would improve the quality of the milk (if not the cream). In the end if it just didn’t work out we could eat her.

Homer there is the idea that pasteurization also kills the good “germs” so you end up having to buy activia to do the same job. I used to visit with a friend on a dairy farm back when I was young. The milk was good. I presume the shelf life would be reduced which would probably be my main problem (but good for making brown bread I believe).

Interesting…but they pasteurize yogurt and that still has the good bacteria in it. Dunno, guess my philosophy is that I’d rather kill the bad and some good than get ANY bad….just my feelings but interesting perspectives…and yes, holy cow that’s more expensive!

Homer: With yogurt they add a benign bacterial culture after pasteurization process has killed the majority of the potentially harmful bacteria. For me, the desirability of raw milk has less to do with the bacterial aspect (and other enzymes that are probably killed by the pasteurization process) and more to do with the flavor. You could drink pasteurized milk your whole life and not know what milk is TRULY supposed to taste like. The first taste of raw milk is a very moooooving experience. But not without controversy.

Maureen O’Hagan of the Seattle Times did an interesting, well-balanced piece (with video produced by Steve Ringman) back in March:

My wife and I currently buy our milk from Golden Glen. Makes great yogurt. I may be interested & I’ll let you know. Will have to recheck the price @ Golden Glen. I’d love the opportunity to make some cheese at home. Can’t really do it with the products that are out there now.
