GenHillOneParticipantIt appears that as of 5:00pm, Sealth is in the championship round of KIRO’s School Spirit poll.
I feel like we should recognize Sealth’s “opponents” in this poll – Inglemoor, Liberty, Renton, West Seattle (of course!), and probably, given the results, the entire left side of the bracket. These schools showed true sportsmanship and, in the spirit of the competition, voted BY HAND. Hard work!
I’m sure there were schools on the right side that did too, but I didn’t follow those closely from the beginning, so my apologies. There were a few, however, that obviously used electronic “bots” to mechanically enter votes 24 hours a day, reaching tens-of-thousands of votes. This is not meant to be a rant on them. To be clear, KIRO did not say that method was against the rules (which would be my real rant here, because even if they couldn’t enforce it, it would have been nice to at least make the request, especially after receiving feedback from the participants). Maybe next time, KIRO?
I know that the Chief Sealth staff is very supportive and has allowed students the access and opportunity to vote on school computers, which is beyond terrific. Now in the championship round, I’m not sure if Sealth will make the decision to use bots, or if they can since it’s the weekend. If they do (a project for the web design classes? LOL), it may only be to put them on equal footing with their final opponent. Either way, they should continue to be very proud of how they got to this point.
I, for one, will keep voting and hope others will too in this final east vs. west match-up :)

Go Seahawks!!!

JanSParticipantand now the opposition is using bots? is there some way to complain to KIRO? That just sucks…way to play fair. That doesn’t show school spirit..that shows people how to cheat ! I will continue to vote BY HAND over the weekend…

GenHillOneParticipantAfter amassing more than 19,000 votes overnight, it looks like Interlake has turned off their bots. Hopefully this is more than temporary and they have reconsidered their strategy. In the meantime, that’s a lot of ground to make up by Monday evening, but the counter shows Sealth DOES have people voting, so thanks to all who have voted/continue to vote!

GenHillOneParticipantLOL, I guess it’s time for a spirit report :) Interlake has had a little movement since this morning, but Sealth has steadily increased, one percentage point at a time, and has over 10,000 votes – keep ’em coming!

GenHillOneParticipantboo. Their bots are back on.

JanSParticipantI think that once the verdict is in that some “anonymous” person should make a big stink about the bots….totally, totally unfair. Shows me that they think they can’t win the fair way. I have no use for people like that. They must make their parents and teachers proud :(

GenHillOneParticipantSomething cool happened last night, JoB – and I’m not a techie, so I have NO idea how it works.
When Interlake turned on the bot, Sealth had 35%. There was a little lag as Interlake rang up a few hundred votes, it dropped to 34%, and then held there with it’s own “smaller?” bot. When Interlake turned theirs off an hour later, Sealth’s went off too. So SOMEBODY was watching close enough to keep the contest fair. Somebody who knew how to, in effect, counteract the bot, but didn’t continue to use it unfairly. It was interesting to watch.
Off to vote :)

IrukandjiParticipantWhere’s the KIRO investigative team when you need them? Obviously not as obsessed with fairness and KIROradio’s Dori Monson.

GenHillOneParticipantHey, Dori! Interlake bots have been turned on again.
May 18, 2009 at 2:07 pm #666843
GenHillOneParticipant102,000 “votes” this morning? wow. just wow.
on second thought, not just wow. yuck.
Chins up today, Sealth!

JoBParticipantthis vote has nothing to do with spirit..
but everything to do with winning at any cost…
is this what we want to teach our children?
May 18, 2009 at 5:19 pm #666845
JanSParticipantJoB, I totally agree. The only thing the Interlake kids have garnered from tis is in order to get ahead, cheat. These students are in class right now, and these bots should be turned off. Guess the teachers and parents are condoning them.
I wrote to Eric Lerner, the VP/general Manager at KIROTV yesterday evening, complaining about this, and asked how they could possibly give this award to a school that cheated to get it…wonder if I’ll hear back :(

JoBParticipantplease share if you get a response…
