angelescrestParticipantNeighbors, we are in the same boat with all the trash, but to let it spill out onto the sidewalks and streets is unhealthy and gross. Perhaps they are unaware that is “unsecured”, but three residences on my block have let it go, and I have piled it back in for two, and placed rocks on top of their lids. (And some of the contents were horrendous!) Eeeyuck. I don’t know what to do with the stuff piling out of the plastic trash bags, which have been enthusiastically attacked by gulls and crows. I think realistic solutions (as well as trips to the transefer stations)and suggestions would be welcomed by all (except for those happy birds and beasts).

KeithMemberDefinitely avoid the alleys around the Junction, they are disgusting and overflowing with garbage.

karenParticipantI agree that it is gross. So what do you all do? I haven’t got extra cans and I can ‘t get out to the dump. So my solution, like everyone else, is to bag it and put it out. (No, not in the alley or the street but behind my garage.) Still, the birds and beasts are at it and I haqve to keep cleaning it up.
Arrgh! I hope they can get through this week!
Still, I AM glad that I did not see a big garbage truck skidding down the street toward my car!

HunterGParticipantI think we should all take pictures of this mess and email them to the mayor.
Is this your “Green Seattle” Mr. Nickles?

WesCAddleMemberKaren-
Might I suggest purchasing a box of “Husky Contractor Clean-Up Trash Bags” from Home Depot? They are 42 gal capacity and are very tough. Much harder for birds and animals to tear into.
Or you can go buy an extra garbage can for under $10 at most hardware stores. They are handy to have around, but I’m not sure if the stores have many in right now.

transplantellaParticipantI was in a backwater Arab country a couple of years ago during a time when it was hit by an unusual winter snowfall.
Their streets and sidewalks were not cleared, the trash was not picked up and soon piled up in the streets and blew through the city. There were vermin. It was a mess.
But this is not Baku Azerbaijan. I was under the impression that Seattle was a better administered more civilized place.
Guess I was wrong. Baku was a lot cheaper than Seattle though.

JoBParticipantor.. you can put your extra bags in the garage until pick up day…
December 27, 2008 at 1:07 am #652239
WSMomParticipantDowntown Seattle is really gross as well! Shocking that even downtown is being neglected. It is disturbing that more of an effort is not being made to pick up the trash now that things are warming up. I think crews should be working overtime this weekend to take care of downtown Seattle and the West Seattle businesses at the very least!!

AnonymousInactiveAccording to a morning post on the home page, they are working all weekend.
*Special Saturday and Sunday pickup is being scheduled, conditions permitting, for the city’s residential garbage, recycling, food and yard waste customers, Seattle Public Utilities said today.*

SemeleParticipantWe have our extra weeks worth of trash in the garage and will put the bags out tomorrow morning. Unfortunately not everyone has a garage and piling up trash in the house is not an option. I really hope they pick up our trash this time as I am sure everyone else does. Not everyone has a truck capable of taking trash to the transfer station.
December 27, 2008 at 5:24 am #652242
josie2006MemberWe’ve had missed trash pick-ups 2 weeks in a row now, and the recycling was missed as well…we are now using our yard waste containers as backups, since they were empty. I also took all of our christmas recyclables to the transfer station today. Boxes and wrapping paper are more pleasant to put in the car than bags of stinky trash and leaves room in our extra containers for trash.
One problem we have had when this happened a few years ago was that when they finally did pick up our trash, they ignored the extra can of trash that we put out, even though we were told we could put out extra due to the missed pickup. Has anyone else had this happen? They finally picked it up the following week when we put a huge sign on it “extra trash”.

JeannieParticipantHmm…maybe we should deliver our trash to Mayor Nickel’s house. OK, just kidding, folks. But allow me to indulge in this little fantasy.
December 27, 2008 at 8:10 am #652244
WesCAddleMemberAlso, many of you already know this, but you can take all of your recycling to West Seattle Recycling under the West Seattle bridge. It is closer than going to the transfer station….and they pay you for certain kinds of metal. They had bins for cardboard and you just drive up and drop off…no waiting…no fuss… here is the website:
December 27, 2008 at 8:22 am #652245
JeannieParticipantI assume we won’t get a break on our garbage bill. After all, the city needs our money.
December 27, 2008 at 10:57 am #652246
AnonymousInactiveI pay for a large-enough garbage can so that I can easily fit two weeks’ garbage in it. I like having extra capacity in case one of my dogs manufactures extra garbage unexpectedly.
December 27, 2008 at 5:16 pm #652247
BonnieParticipantSomebody stole the lid to our trash can. Very annoying! How do I go about getting another one? I’m assuming call the city but I doubt we’ll get a lid for some time with the way they’ve been overloaded.
December 27, 2008 at 5:38 pm #652248
JoBParticipantScott B…
i was thinking about cutting the size of our trash can when i noticed those itty bitty cans.. but i think i will stick with what we have after all… it holds a couple of weeks of trash… but even that has been strained to the limits at Christmas.
December 27, 2008 at 6:49 pm #652249
angelescrestParticipantI actually saw a trash truck head west down Admiral @9:00 a.m., but I haven’t heard or seen it (or others) since. I was excited!
Bonnie, when we moved in, we needed a replacement trash can, and the city was good about delivering.
Thanks for info, Wes!

dhgParticipantStore the excess in the garage? Oh I can’t do that. That’s where I put the marble for the swimming pool. I thought of hauling it over to the carriage house but the doorman sleeps there and he might tell cook and then my eggs will be runny.
December 27, 2008 at 9:49 pm #652251
angelescrestParticipantSo whose responsibility is it anyway in apartment buildings? The tenants’ or the management’s? ‘Cuz those alleyways are a sight; there was no discernible attempt to organize the garbage…more like it was just tossed onto the ground. If the garbage trucks pick up the garbage, they’re not going to pick up the crud on the ground, and that’s pretty sucky (big vernacular here) for all of us. Yeah, it’s a bit of a pain to squish and squash and regroup (and perhaps dig up another can), but under extraordinary circumstances, big deal. NOT.
