SueParticipantLast year a pedestrian signal was put up at this intersection. Every morning I cross this intersection to get the bus for work. And nearly every morning, when I push the button and the light changes to red for the Fauntleroy drivers, at least one car blantantly runs through the red light while I’m starting to cross the street.
The fact that it is a pedestrian-activated signal means that the light never turns red unless a pedestrian is trying to cross the street and has pushed the button. So not only are the drivers failing to yield to a pedestrian (which is illegal), they are failing to stop at a red light (which is also illegal). And I’m not talking about drivers running through on the last second of the yellow to red change (although they do that too) – my rant is about drivers who are blatantly running the red light and have no regard for me and/or other pedestrians crossing.
Red light means STOP, people! None of you are so important that you cannot wait 30 seconds for the light to change back to green.

AlParticipantSue, I have seen this too – suprisingly frequently. One car nearly ran me over in his (yes, his) haste to run the completely red, not yellow, light. I would highly encourage you to put it in writing to SPD. The more people that do this will hopefully bring more enforcement. It’s extremely dangerous. http://www.seattle.gov/police/contact/

beachdrivegirlParticipantThI see this way to much on first ave s as well as fourth ave s as well. The buses are the worst! I have made an active effort to call Metro on them each time I see this happen.

HMC RichParticipantI drive this route everyday and some people are not used to it because usually the light is Green.
A lot of people are not paying enough attention to the actual task of driving.
I have seen the red only a few times and I have seen people run through it.
I have always felt there should be two red lights, one flashing and one constantly on.
Pedestrians cannot assume that it is safe to walk across any crosswalk. Once, coming out of Husky Stadium I was T-Boned by another car because they didn’t see the light and I just took off when the light was green. Although they were in the wrong, I assumed they would stop. I was mistaken.
People make mistakes whether walking or driving but the drivers usually cause more damage.
Just be careful and pay attention and report them if you need to.

AnonymousInactiveThus my post last night about being aware of pedestrians….
What we need is 5 business days of traffic related martial law every month. Deploy every reserve officer in the county to Fauntleroy, I-35, and California, and nail every cell phone wielding, makeup applying, song singing, no attention paying driverperson with a moving violation and make it hurt in terms of $$$. That’s the only way people are going to pay attention – hit ’em in the pocketbook.
Revoke licenses for anyone that receives more than one infraction during the period of martial law. This is a great way to steer people towards higher utilization of public transportation and carpooling.
Bottom line for anyone operating a motor vehicle – slow down, open your eyes, and PAY ATTENTION.
