I took my 8 year old gortex jacket in for a cleaning and water proofing at Cory’s in West Seattle (it cost $245 new). I had called ahead and got a quote of $19, then whe I dropped it off I was told I had to pay $27 because it is considered an “overcoat” not a “jacket”. I paid it and a few days later, when it was “finished”, they called me and I went to pick it up. Not only was it still dirty, but the fabric was bubbling up because it had separated from itself. The gal behind the counter said “It was definately not like that when you brought it in cuz I would’ve noticed that”. She asked me to leave the jacket for her manager to take a look. I agreed. She called me back the next day and informed me that the manager said that when gortex gets old it can “break down” and that re-cleaning it would only make that worse. She also informed me that I can fill out a form to get my cleaning fees back, if I wanted to, but she could not do any refunds in store. I filled out the form and left the jacket, once again, so it could be sent with my “complaint” to Cory himself. A few days later I got a letter from Corey stating that they do not ever claim to be able to get any garment “completely clean” and that since my overcoat was 8 years old and the typical lifespan of an overcoat is 3 years it had already outlived its life. They would not refund my cleaning fee, yet admitted that the damage happen while it was in thier “care” however said it was only because my coat was old not because they damaged it. I would not recommend taking your item there unless it is brand new, you have a receipt and you don’t really care what happens to it….The long and the short…..I washed it (as per label) for all of those years with no problem and after one trip to Cory’s my jacket is no longer water proof at all and it is ugly with dirty spots and areas of separated fabric – totally unwearable….all beacause I took it to Cory’s Drycleaning. :( BEWARE!!

I understand you’re frustrated by the situation but dear god…..

EIGHT years?? You’ve been wearing this same coat since about the turn of the millinneum?

Time for a new coat! You deserve it. Put the old one clean out of your mind and think beautiful new turn-of-the-decade coat. Something suitable for mid 21st century. Leap forward.

The old one cost you $30 a year. Buy a new $60 coat and wear it for two years. Then get another one.

Out with the old, in with the new! Reinvent.

I’m still trying to get my head around why a GoreTex jacket would need to be re-waterproofed, ever.

According to the Gore-Tex folks the waterproofing can reach “the end of its useful life” and then you’d need to spray it with something to make it waterproof again.

You need to retain a good lawyer and take Corry to the cleaners! There’s a guy named Roy Pearson who might be able to help…

i have a sweater that I bought in 1999. it is still in great shape and still stylish. i have a green wool peacoat that i bought in the 90’s as well, that is still in good shape. you spend money on classic pieces and they will last as long as you take care of them. a $245 gortex coat should last a long time. unless some cleaner ruins it.

i would be as upset as the OP in this situation.

No, Saney, the American way is to buy cheap clothes and replace them as frequently as possible. After all, there’s nothing irresponsible about “fast fashion” stores such as H&M. *eye roll* Yeah, the comment about just buying a cheap coat every two years got under my skin, as well. I consider myself fairly fashionable, but I buy good-quality, classic pieces, and expect them to last a reasonable amount of time.

The quality of clothing has gone down so much that people’s expectations are way too low; I know people who are impressed when a pair of shoes lasts one season of normal wear.

No joke about quality. Lately I’m having a tough time getting my levis to make it past six months before a knee goes out or something.

Corry’s logic is faulty. If we keep buying new clothes, why would we need dry cleaning?

Austin, I bought an embellished t-shirt at Nordstrom last summer without looking closely at the construction (it was cute, that’s my only excuse). After one wash and hang-drying per instructions, the side seams had completely twisted around so that one came toward the front of the shirt and one toward the back. I think the manufacturer made a poor fabric choice, and the fabric was bias-cut. Bad, bad, bad… I ended up returning it to Nordstrom, felt a litle guilty, but I depend on that store to carry clothing of at least acceptable quality.

Well, KBear, I don’t know about you, but in order to be as wasteful as possible, I like to wear my clothes once, have them dry-cleaned, then burn them for heat. The perchloroethylene turns the flames cool colors!

Out with the old, in with the new! Reinvent!

Since I am the lucky one that works from home, today’s to-do list included pick up the dry cleaning. I will be curious what they will have to say since they either don’t read the blog, or just don’t care!!

Carson, if you regularly use Corry’s and plan to continue, today’s Groupon was 50% off their CO2 cleaning services. Don’t know the specifics, but you may want to check it out. I use BlueSky Cleaners’ CO2 cleaning currently and really like it.

Sarah, I have learned long ago, when it comes to things like dry cleaning, I just do what I am told, but I will make sure the decision maker sees it!

Clothing that I have noticed to be lasting for quite a long time are Carhart brand, unfortunatly I have noticed that they have lost some quality from items produced just a few years ago. If you want some jeans that will last forever might I suggest Duluth Trading Company’s Fire hose work pants.

First of all, its Corrys, with 2 (two) R’s. Of course they had a slightly different version to tell and I suggested they log on and present it. We’ll see if they do. Judging by past experiences, and I am only the errand boy, I would keep doing business with them.

transplantella – I do get what you’re saying and I never denied that my jacket was older, but I have other quality items that have lasted as long and longer. I actually do have other jackets/coats that are newer too. This one just happened to be my favorite. Gortex manufacturers typically recommend that you re-water proof your jacket through a dry cleaning service every 3-5 years of normal use (ironic since Cory claims they only last 3 years). Since I did not wear this one anywhere near every day I waited 8 years. My true point was that it was not damaged when I dropped it off; it was damaged when I picked it up. In most any other service situation if the customer was not satisfied with the service, the company would offer to redo the service or refund the money. They did neither – they blamed me. All I wanted was my “cleaning” fee returned, not a replacement of my jacket, which I think was a very reasonable request.

For the rest of you ladies who are looking for a long lasting pair of jeans “Express” makes a quality product. Mine last a year or two of regular wear. Just make sure you try them on before you buy them, as they are handmade and each pair is slightly unique.

I expect my jeans to last longer than a year or two, as well. For quality, I like Joe’s Jeans and J.Crew. J.Crew jeans are generally made in the US or Canada, too. Wash on cold cycle, never put in dryer – always hang-dry. My jeans stay looking pretty new this way, and keep their shape well.

I am a middle aged, educated woman and until now I have never actually posted anything on any website against any company or person before. Now, after the way I was treated, I am looking for every place I can to get the word out about Corry’s (with 2 rs). I will also be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the Washington State Attorney General’s consumer protection division. I am actually even considering contacting the “Get Jesse” team, as I am sure I am not the only one this has happened to.

I truly hope that Corry’s does respond here (and the many other places I have posted this complaint) to explain how they can justify a policy that states they do not have to “completely clean” your item or how, if they deem your garment/item to be too old, they can justify ruining it and keeping your service fee.

Perhaps “gortex” is not manufactured to the same durability standard as GORE-TEX.

Funny! :) It is a Moonstone GORE-TEX hard shell jacket purchased at R.E.I.
