This is addressed to everyone, Dem or Repub. Do you know who your PCO is? Do you ever hear from them? Would you like to hear from them? What is your experience?

I know that I have no idea who my PCO is. I am in Precinct 34-1424. I vote absentee. And I have never been contacted locally by anyone , that I can remember, asking if I’m going to vote, if I have any questions, offering information, etc., etc. So, I guess my question is…what exactly is the job of PCO about..are there any out there besides Ken who are lurking on here?

I think your Dem PCO might still be in Africa :)

But she has the ear of a rather famous movie star/ 7th district congresscritter.

This page has a list with email addresses. Mine is 34-1490

    http://www.34dems.org/org_pcos.htm

also note the precinct number is on your voter registration card and a map is available at

    http://www.metrokc.gov/elections/gis/maps/cities/seapg3.pdf

and the the king county IMAP page now has “voting districts” layer that can be turned on within the legends on the right sidebar.

    http://www.metrokc.gov/gis/mapportal/iMAP_main.htm

start with the “Electoral Districts” mapset.

Who knew I am in the Aquaview district? I do absentee voting, which is awesome but I think it separates you somewhat. I I have missed one or two votes in my life but want to be more involved, thanks Ken.

I am curious about how the 34th district Republicans find out who their PCO is?

This page seems to have the listings of those who have filed in king county for both parties.

    http://metrokc.gov/elections/200808/candidatefilings.asp

The local Paul Bearers indicate Republican PCO’s filings in King co are at 650, which is 200 or more down from 04.

I will plug the list into mysql tomorrow and see if I can pull out a list for the 34th and get a good count.

Here is a link to the form needed to get appointed as a Dem PCO in a precinct that is without one.

    http://www.kcdems.net/documents/PCONoSig.html

remember the top two primary introduces odd possibilities into all races this year.

I am seeing some indication that the Ron Paul republicans might try to take over some Seattle districts from the current republican PCO’s but the WA republican party doesn’t let the PCO’s actually vote on anything or have any power so it is really not that attractive a prize. I suspect it is all talk and no action.

Ken, the King County GOP doesn’t list any elected PCO’s at its web site. Prior to this year, they would not circulate PCO contact info to any PCO who requested the list – the leadership likes to keep us isolated. This year KC Elections is publishing contact info of PCO candidates, as you noted.

From the KC Elections listing I’m seeing 1,194 people filed for GOP PCO, which is way up from 2004.

If you mean “Paul Bearers” to be Ron Paul supporters having filed 650 Paulistas then there is a very good chance the Paulistas can take over the County org – I’ve not seen this figure anywhere. In 2006 there were 388 voting PCO’s at the County Convention to reestablish the Party per State law (every 2 years).

What’s really interesting is that the Sec of State has suspended the 10% rule for PCO election, because of “Top Two” technicalities. This means any PCO candidate can be elected with 1 vote if they are unchallenged in their precinct.

From the SoS ruling (see #2) …

WAC 434-262-075 Election of political party precinct committee officers.

    (1) The election of political party precinct

committee officers is not conducted according to a top two primary established by chapter 2, Laws of 2005 (Initiative 872). The candidate of each political party who receives the most votes in

the August primary election is declared elected.

    (2) RCW 29A.80.051 includes a requirement that, to be declared elected, a candidate for precinct committee officer must receive atleast ten percent of the number of votes cast for a candidate of the same party who received the most votes in the precinct. This requirement for election is not in effect because candidates for

public office do not represent a political party.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

As for “it is really not that attractive a prize”, controlling some KC Districts gets voting presence on the KC GOP Exec Board through the District Chair. If a County org is controlled by Paulistas, they get voting presence on the State GOP Committee. Paulista County control will likely occur in at least 2 Counties outside the metroplex Counties. How the Districts break in King County is hard to predict.

It will be a fun time at the County Conventions come December.

Jan, I don’t know who my PCO is, mostly because there is no name listed for our precinct (1469). There’s a period where the name is supposed to be, which I assume means we just don’t have one.

If there is no name listed for your precinct then it can be you. :)

Just showing up at the next district meeting and filling out a form

    http://www.kcdems.net/documents/PCONoSig.html

and staying through the meeting to the place on the agenda where new PCO’s are appointed, can mean you can become the PCO of your precinct. The only requirement is that you must be willing to stand up in front of the members and admit that you are a Democrat :)

Also, it seems that PCO elections on the Aug 19th ballot will accept write in votes… If you have a half dozen friends in the precinct and you ask them to write in your name, you can probably get elected. I just searched the list of candidates and did not find one listed for that precinct.

    Go for it.

If you don’t want to do it, try and get one of your neighbors to volunteer.

Thanks for the info Ken, but I’m already overcommitted enough right now without taking that on too. But hopefully someone else can use the info!
