littlebrowndogParticipantI’m really happy that about 95% of kids who want to pet my dogs at Alki ask, or their parents ask. Our dogs all have their Canine Good Citizen certificates and are really well socialized but a startled dog, even the most even tempered, can react to protect itself. Where we potty our dogs, where we let them off leash, how we train them—wouldn’t it be nice to have the equivalent of that CGC for dog owners? (OK, no I am not proposing one more government mandate, just speaking wistfully.) That’s why I always like to see posts about the Parks Dept. classes and SDA’s activities. A little civility goes a long way.

HolyKowMemberPlease do not tell me to ask the dog owner to put their dog back on the leash. There are few people more arrogant or combative than a dog owner. They think that the law is stupid and therefore do not care if you ask or not. You can stuff it. As with all things, not all are like this, but the VAST majority I have encountered in posts and real life are not only disrespectful on this issue, they are combative.
I should not have to ask someone to not steal my TV. I should not have to ask someone to stop mowing their lawn at 11PM and I should not have to engage a dog owner with an off-leash pet who will probably tell me to shove it if I say something to them.
And I agree 100%, kids should never approach another persons dog without their parents, and really, just never unless you already know the dog. Not. Worth. It.

austinMemberThis morning I had an idea for a business opportunity. It seems like every time I’m at a beach or park I hear someone make the comment “If the city would come down here and enforce leash laws, they’d make so much money”, because there are dogs running and pooping every place you look. Well they’re not gonna do that, they’re short staffed and, well, it’s the government. If they were going to do something that made sense they would have been doing it all along.
Cue your (“your” as in, I’m not gonna run it, isn’t enough that I gave you the awesome idea for free?) new doggy assistance business. The first step is to find a place that sells cheap leashes. The cheaper the better, if you can keep your overhead low you will maximize your profit potential. I found these – http://www.dogsmartway.com/item_detail.php?cid=266 ..they wholesale for three bucks but I bet you could do better. Then all you have to do is hang out at a park and leash dogs. The park that inspired this thread would probably work. Lincoln park or Alki would also have a lot of potential. Once you have the dog you’ll attract the owner pretty quickly, at which point you may choose to sell the dog owner the leash (with dog attached) at a healthy profit. If you can sell those three dollar leashes for ten bucks each (twenty on the beach) you’ll be on easy street.

DuckitudeMemberI’ve got a better idea. Allow bounty hunting for off leash and on the beach dogs. Give a percentage of fines to the bounty hunter. It’s a win win win. More employment, more enforcement, less lawlessness. Do a training course. Use videos for documentation (head cams), Certify the bounty hunters and let them get going.
