skeeterParticipantFamily just bought a Subaru Forester. We’ve lived in West Seattle over four years, but now we feel like we really belong :-) Hee hee.
Seriously, if you keep notice of cars, I think you’ll agree that West Seattle (or maybe Seattle in general) is crawling with Subarus.
So far we like the Forester – nice ride.

BostonmanMemberI agree lol. More so than any other part of the country I have lived in. Personally I will stick with Hondas.

Seattle SinnerParticipantThe Pacific Northwest in general seems to be crawling with Subarus. I just moved here from Humboldt County Ca. and there were just as many if not more in the small town I was in. Had to leave a great, fair honest Subaru mechanic behind.
Who is the go to Sub mechanic in these parts?

DBPMemberskeets is your Forester a plug-in electric?
–No? Aw . . .
Well, how about a hybrid then?
[ . . . ]
–Damn, dude! Missed the boat again!

skeeterParticipantHi DBP – The Forester is not available as either a plug in electric or hybrid. It is gasoline. It is PZEV, meeting the most stringent emission test in California.
Just curious what boat I missed?

DBPMemberHadn’t you noticed? Now everyone’s driving a Prius.
(Sike!)
Anyway, I’ve never heard a complaint about a Forester from an owner, so happy driving.

skeeterParticipantYeah, I see a decent number of Prius around West Seattle, but I still think there are more Subarus.
I’ve never been a big Toyota fan, but I do give them credit for building the finest hybrid you can buy.
I’m curious to see where we’ll be 10 years from now. I suspect hybrids are just a bridging technology until we can get batteries to have the range we need for a 300+ mile road trip. Interesting times lie ahead.

DBPMemberMe: Mazda Protege
I hated like hell to buy a foreign car (always drove Chevys and loved ’em) but I had to get me something that would last and last, because money’s tight.
Just hope I never get into a tiff with a Lincoln on some back-country highway late at night, cuz then I’m screwed.

sbreParticipantI’ve been a Subaru guy my entire adult life with one exception; for the (almost) 5 years I drove Toyota’s Highlander Hybrid. Loved the idea of driving a hybrid AND having the safety/security of all-wheel drive underneath me.
Bought the Toyota while waiting for the Hybrid that Subaru (who’s R & D partnered with Toyota) had announced they were working on. Sadly that never came to pass as they were unable to make the Boxer engine (the heart and soul of a Subaru) work with gadgetry needed to switch from gas engine to electric.
I will ONLY own an all-wheel drive vehicle, thus the Subaru is ideal: 5-Star safety rating across its entire production line, the Boxer engine with its horizontally-opposed pistons sitting at the bottom of the engine to give it a really low center of gravity.
My latest model (2010 Outback) has the rack-and-pinion steering that makes the car hug the road and respond like a more sportier model.
Even with the cargo box on top I am steadily pulling 26-27 mpg out of each tank.
