Has anyone else noticed that Seattle Public Schools only has Safe Walking Routes for children in Elementary school. Why aren’t there Safe Walking Routes for kids in Middle and High School?

Maybe they need safe walking zones for teens who are too pre-occupied by i-pods, cell phones and skateboards to watch where they are walking.

I am just curious as to why there aren’t safe walking routes to middle and high schools, it seems strange that they did the cut-off at elementary.

For what it’s worth I know and have seen more adults walking around using their phones, ipods, and not paying attention where they are walking.

don’t most of the Middle and High schools in WS have sidewalks to walk on? Not the case for at least one elementary school in WS

Maybe because middle and high school students and their parents are presumed to be more experienced and capable of choosing safe walking routes for themselves?

How do you feel about 10, 11 or 12 year olds walking to school for almost 2 miles one way across major intersections and crosswalks and there are so many drivers out ther not paying attention? Yes there are sidewalks in most areas but there are plenty of areas with no sidewalks.

I contacted Feet First and they agree with me that there should be a Safe Walking Route for children attending middle and high school. Yes the parents can choose a safe walking route, and they can do that for the elementary school children but why does it stop after elementary? Is the safety of children at middle and high school less important to the school district and that is why they have opted out of establishing a safe walking route for middle and high school kids?

A friend of mine has a son who will be entering middle school next fall and he lives just under 2.5 miles from school, he does not live far enough away and will not be provided bus transportation so he will be hoofing it 4+ miles aday.

What is a regional reference area school?

I imagine it’s an issue of limited resources. I’m sure they don’t think middle and high school students are less important, just more mature and able to work out safe routes on their own or with their parents. Maybe Feet First or some concerned parents could volunteer to map out all the safe routes.
