PibalParticipantGreat picture and a nice change! All ages, pet lovers too, silhouetted so one can only wonder who they might be, and all apparently at ourAlki Beach to observe the sunsets we treasure so much.
I’m certain this was a group that did not know each other yet all were sharing a common purpose at that moment. Makes a great statement… Thanks!

DianeParticipantI assumed this was the recent whale watch at sunset

miwsParticipantFor anyone that is still seeing the old image, I was able to update it by mousing over the image>>>right click>>>Reload.
Worked for me on W7 OS, Google Chrome Browser.
And yeah! Great pic!
I normally don’t like change, but this one is cool!

B-squaredParticipantYAY! Finally! That’s a great shot – and yes, it does look like a whale watch pic from Monday, complete with Lowman Beach tennis court net (just a guess).

clark5080ParticipantYup had to refresh the web page also to get it to show

B-squaredParticipantJust for fun, photoshop in a GIANT dorsal fin;)

cjboffoliParticipantI like it because it captures the spirit of the classic banner image but it adds more people in silhouette. And to me one of the best assets the WSB has (in addition to its extremely dedicated and talented publishers) is its readers: the people in this community who read, comment on, send news tips to, and support the advertisers of this excellent, ground-breaking news website.
October 12, 2012 at 11:05 pm #773633
birdrescuerParticipantWOW I love it.
October 13, 2012 at 7:31 am #773634
KevinParticipantThe new masthead is wonderful! Very fitting for WS, and the WSB!
October 13, 2012 at 1:43 pm #773635
miwsParticipantThe more I look at the new masthead, the more I agree with Christopher’s comment.
In comparison to the previous image, it’s as if if shows the evolution of WSB, in the fact that the community has become so much more involved in participating in “reporting” the news.
Just look at any articles related to major weather events, police activity, school issues, transit issues, and Trader Joe’s. ;-)

addParticipantAbsolutely love it!
October 13, 2012 at 4:23 pm #773637
kgdlgParticipantSorry but I am going to be a dissenter and say that the new pic is too dark for me, especially as we head into fall. I love the people in it, but it kind of depresses me…

Talaki34ParticipantThere are so many gifted photographers like Christopher Boffoli who makes the viewer feel a part of the moment, Machel Spence who just contributed yet another amazing picture of a world we almost never notice, Nick Adams stunning pictures of the whales at sunset and all the other wonderful professional/amateur photographers (too numerous to list) that capture and share with the rest of us what it means to live in WS. So I was thinking…Changing the banner weekly would give us an additional 52 photos to marvel at every year.

JayDeeParticipantThank Tracy and Patrick…I’ve been trying to entice them to update for the past three years. I even know the pixel count. Granted while the pix I submitted were the right pixel count, they were passed over. Thanks for changing it this time, and lets hope you publish the dimensions/subject matter content for future submissions.

QueMemberI love the sense of community that is in the photo, that I feel reflects the community in WS, and is represented so well here at WSB.

WSBKeymasterHonestly, I wasn’t really looking for a new one. It was rather one of those “I knew it when I saw it.”
Even though the “pink nuclear explosion” predecessor wasn’t anything fancy at all … I believe it was actually a grab I took off a video clip I shot for reasons I long since have forgotten … it had people in it … not recognizable people … people that could have been anyone (OK, well, I couldn’t have been the rollerblader). And the water, and the sunset, and a bit of the landscape.
Then when Nick accepted the assignment to shoot orcas that day they came by … when I saw a couple of his images later that night, I thought, THAT would probably look good in the header – the silhouettes made the difference, but I never could have specified that if anyone had asked me “what are you looking for in a header image?” – just knew it when I saw it.
(Nick’s work from that evening also had a similar image with fewer people in it.)
Then I had to try to remember where the header image lived in the CSS files, and figure out how to FTP into it, and that alone took a bunch of time ..
But it’s not just “OK, we’re going to put good photos up there and there are a zillion good photos, so we’ll rotate.” This may be up there another three years. Or three weeks. Or three months. A higher priority remains a site design upgrade and that one too is a case of “we’ll know it when we see it.” Could be tomorrow, could be another seven years.
What matters the most here is the coverage, which takes every waking hour (and we still don’t cover a tenth of what we wish we could), and the discussion.
Thank you all for being here.

PibalParticipantTracy, Patrick, & all WSB staffers and photographers,
It’s us that should be thanking you all for being here. WSB has become an integral, if not essential, part of the fabric of this community. It’s also a great source of pride. “Why yes, we’re from West Seattle. We’re home of the West Seattle Blog…”
It is indeed a very collaborative partnership. Note the tremendous sense of ownership: “Wow, look at that! Better call/e-mail/tweet the blog to let them know…” Great energy, great participation, great information, great discussions – simply to serve this intrepid, electic, wildly unique and diverse group that calls West Seattle home. A simple thank you doesn’t seem to offer sufficient gratitude for what you have created and maintained. We offer it back to you nonetheless. Thank you!

miwsParticipantWSB trivia, which I’m 98.9578421377351% certain is reality, and not my imagination:
There was a header image, very similar to the previous one, that ran for a relatively short time, until the previous one was implemented.

2 Much WhineParticipantPretty funny. I skipped over this post several times because I thought it referred to a new picture of the heavy metal band “Masthead.” (which may or may not exist). Nice picture.
October 14, 2012 at 8:11 pm #773646
WSBKeymasterMike, the pink fireball photo was actually at least the third one. The one I remember most clearly, because it also was a case of seeing a photo and saying “hey! that would make a good header photo!” was a waves-crashing-on-seawall photo by Bob Bollen. The Wayback Machine, which does not have a very good archive of WSB, nonetheless took this grab in 2006:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060207015844/https://westseattleblog.com/
We were a very different site back then. Our stories are all archived on site here too but because of dynamic aspects of the site, you can access the old content but it’ll come up with current header and sidebar. The Wayback Machine is more like a freeze-frame of the whole thing, but they didn’t crawl sites daily or even weekly.

sun*eParticipantI love the new pic of all the silhouettes sight seeing or maybe whale watching while enjoying the beautiful sunset… it’s what we all love about living in WS. Perfect!

I WonderMemberAs much as I like sunsets, I haven’t quite enamored myself with the past two darker, dusk photographs used as the masthead. It never quite captured a “signature” West Seattle scene IMHO. I always leaned towards a snow capped, day time shot that shouted the views we get to enjoy, and would also brighten the page. The dark images reminded me of the gloomy weather we already have. That said, what is the signature West Seattle landmark? Not that WSB needs that shot, just curious what it might be. Mine is the view across Elliot, and west to the Olympics (even though we are fortunate enough to have many 360′ vies on our island).
