I’m one of the last people who don’t own a cell phone. I’ve enjoyed not having one but I’m now thinking I should get one because of the on-call volunteer work I will be doing (and it wouldn’t hurt for potential road side emergencies). I don’t want a long term phone contract. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well if you’re one of the last, I intend to be the Last Person in America without a cell phone. Gotcha beat.

When we first moved here before our old-fashioned landline was installed, we bought a Trac phone, $30 or $40 from Target. You need to buy Trac phone cards to load minutes. And you get charged for ALL calls–incoming, outgoing, 800 numbers–everything.

But we don’t really use the phone much so it doesn’t matter.

Ultimatly Trac phone is still a lot cheaper than these vampire phone companies that nickel and dime your bill into the hundreds every month and then have the gall to charge you for ditching their service.

Dear Transplantella, I don’t have one “YET” so I’m still a contender! Its’ kind of nice not having one, isn’t it? I’m the first to admit that “on occasion” I HAVE benefited from the kindness of strangers that DO have cell phones, and I thank them for that. Met some very nice people. I’ve not obtained one because I didn’t feel the need, and I have this horrible vision of a giant floating gyre of discarded cell phones floating on the Pacific Ocean, in the not to distant future. However, I’m willing to concede that because of the on-call volunteer work I will be involved with, a cell phone could be a critical asset. Thanks for the info!

like Jan said, and recommended to me couple years ago; Virgin Mobile is excellent, cheap, reliable; you don’t have to sign a contract, but there’s option to sign up for auto-pay so you don’t have to worry about refills; I only use the phone function, which is $21.90/mo, including tax; had to buy the phone, which was only $20 two yrs ago; still works perfect; same phone is $10 or $15 at Radio Shack now; absolute best deal around

We’ve used T-mobile for years. No contract – pay as you go.

We spend $100 on minutes which don’t expire for a year and as long as you add more minutes before the years up (they send a free reminder text) you don’t lose any minutes.

We rarely use our phone and only used $30 for the whole year!

I’m using the Virgin Mobile PayLo plan; it’s a bit hard to find on their website; from the main site that Jan linked above, go to “site map”, then there’s a link bottom left for Paylo

I have the LG 101, listed for $15 there

I have the Talk plan, $20 for 400 mins, which I never use anywhere close to that amount; but it’s so cheap, who cares?

most important, the service is very reliable

Consider the ATT “Go Phone.” A cheap phone purchased at Bartells can be had for $20 – $30, and then you pre pay $15, $25, $50, or $100 at a time and the minutes are $.10. This allows you to have a variable bill that can be as low as several dollars per month to perhaps $10 or $15 dollars per month if you talk a lot. NO contracts!

    .

ATT coverage is generally very good. Just remember to put money on your phone because the minutes DO expire if you do not use them in a certain time frame. Best buy is the $100 option where the minutes are good for a year. And even if you don’t use all you money (minutes) just put some more money on the phone before the expiration date and you get to keep all your minutes.

Only just met you ar the breakfast s0 don’t know your circumstances or your age.

Ayone on low income, medcaid, foodstamps, SSI and several other instances can get a FREEell phone and 250 minutes a month. Google Free Cell Phones and check it out. I know many who have them.

I used to have a Trac phone but now my daughter has me on her plan.

AT&T’s Go Phone plan has worked great for me for years, as a low use cell phone user. I even lost my phone once and they froze the minutes and put them on a new phone for me.
