mark harmanParticipantHi all, I need some professional networking help around my house to set up new modem, router and run some internet cable around the outside of my house. Does anyone know someone other than calling Comcast/Xfinity to do this sort of stuff. Thanks in Advance.

ChemistParticipantMark, setting up a router and cable modem is something plenty of people have done with a little studying or a quick-start guide appropriate to the manufacturer. Typically, it’s more work programming all the devices to connect to the new wifi network.
There’s a very different set of tools and concerns involved with running internet wires (cat 5 or cat 6 cable, nowadays), particularly if you’re going to run it exterior to the home because most of that cable isn’t rated for outdoor/uv exposure like that. When I ran a bunch of network cable in this home, I ended up buying tools/keystone jacks/keystone plates from monoprice and found it a lot easier to run cable in the uninsulated interior walls by drilling up from the unfinished basement. In a few places, I was able to swap out old cable or phone jack coverplates and replace those with coverplates that held multiple types of plugs.

ChemistParticipantHey Mark, I was throwing out one of those coupon pamphlets that comes in the mail and noticed Constructive Energy at 206-932-2277 was in the Nov-Feb book and said they did network wiring, amongst A/V, home automation, new and remodel electric, etc.
If it’s something complicated enough that you’d prefer someone be licensed/bonded when drilling holes in your walls, it looks like they offer that sort of service.
Depending on how far you have to go, you could always add crown molding to the interior…. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-conceal-electrical-wires-crown-molding

JayDeeParticipantI was just curious why you need to run wiring? I have a 2,500 square foot home and Wi-Fi seems to work fine. Alot easier than punching holes in walls. I have Apple Airports, and they play pretty well together.

ChemistParticipantIn my case, I added wiring because I have a few computers that I occasionally need to send double-digit numbers of gigabytes between and I get impatient (I still run Windows 7 Media Center as my DVR and have a 5 TB file server). I also find that things like my Chromecast perform better using the slightly-faster hard-wire connection.
