anonymeParticipantThis post is directed toward all those great animal rescue folks in West Seattle, or anyone of like mind. Occasionally I go through Craig’s List ads and flag the pet sales as “prohibited”. As many of you may or may not know, pet sales are banned on CL. That doesn’t stop the unscrupulous. I just took a look, and I’ve never seen so many puppy ads – for high prices. Please lets get together and flag off these ads. Many or most of these ads are by unlicensed breeders. There are way too many dogs and cats literally dying for homes already. Please adopt!

EmmyJaneParticipantI used to do this but haven’t for a while. I’ll get on it tonight! Maybe we should ban together under the name “Craigslist puppy mill nannies” with the slogan “We’re taking you down Craigslist-poster-rule-breakers-who-are-likely-unlicensed-breeders, one “prohibited” flag at a time… mwahahah. P.S. You are not one of us.”
Too long?

CarsonParticipantOr figure out how to use proxies and you can delete an ad in about 10 mouse clicks…

anonymeParticipantEmmyJane: I like it. Could be longer.
Just a few of the breeds I saw advertised today were malamutes, chihuahuas, and pointers. Haven’t even gotten to the kittens yet.

GenHillOneParticipantunlicensed breeders or stolen!

SueParticipantWhere exactly are you seeing the ads on Craigslist? I tried poking around but didn’t see what you’re referring to since there’s obviously no “pets for sale” section. I found a lot of stuff for farm animals, but not pets.
BTW, I’m not doubting you that they are there, just wanting to help but can’t find them!

DPMemberI support what you’re doing, but I’m curious: How do you know who’s really unscrupulous? Is there a certain dollar amount that you draw the line at? Is there a special lingo that breeders use?
Some of these people are probably just making an innocent mistake, right? Or am I being naive (again)?

anonymeParticipantDP, what I mean is that I believe it is unscrupulous to breed ‘status’ dogs & cats for money, while tens of thousands of homeless animals are destroyed every year. In addition, most (or all) licensed breeders know better than to use Craig’s List. The prices range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Many of these posters have developed their own lingo to get around CL rules. They use vague titles on their posts, ask people to call for pricing, etc. There may be some “innocent” postings, but not many.
Sue, I usually do searches in “all for sale” using keywords such as puppies, puppy, pups, kitten, etc. I also try specific breed names. As I stated above, some of these people are pretty slick. There is currently an ad for hunting dogs that says something about a Walker hound & it’s posted under ‘sporting goods’. Gives you an idea of how these animals are regarded: as merchandise.

dhgParticipantTo aid your efforts: I strongly recommend using Firefox w/ Craigslist Image Prefetcher. This displays the photos in the list, making scanning for hits much much faster: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12544/

hammerheadParticipantIf I make another suggestion. When you call on the free kittens ask the people if they would like to get their moma cat fixed. If they do give them my number. Even if it is feral of course.
If not well then I guess you get to see what I deal with every day.

charlabobParticipantCraigslist rule is no animal sales. Report everything. Don’t worry about whether it’s a legitimately scammy scam. (I know some of the CL founders and, believe me, they hate what’s happening to their site as much as we all do.) If someone gets flagged, they get investigated or pulled.
Someone had an ad for “as many kittens as we can In nanoeconds she was flagged. now she’s gone.

anonymeParticipantHammerhead, that’s a good suggestion for people answering free kitten ads. Hope they see your post. Last year I ended up keeping a stray I couldn’t find a home for, and Feral Cat Spay & Neuter neutered him for only $15. I’m only too aware of what you deal with every day; it takes a lot of internal fortitude to do what you do, and I admire you tremendously for it.
I often hear people say that they allow their cats to have kittens so that their kids can experience “the miracle of birth”. Not very tactful perhaps, but I always ask if they also allow their children to witness the inevitable reality at the other end of that rainbow – the miracle of abandonment, starvation, injury, disease, and euthanasia. I’ll never forget standing in an animal shelter and watching an attendant walk by with a full basket of the most beautiful kittens I’d ever seen – on their way to the gas chamber.
dhg, thanks for the Firefox tip. I’m not terribly computer savvy, but could probably manage that one!

anonymeParticipantJust checked, and the new CL ads today are for(search terms, not my spelling) puggle, shih tzu, mini dachshund, German Shepherd. The Walker hound ad is still up. Also missed from yesterday, pitbull puppies advertised under “we need good homes”.
