KatherineLParticipantI’m cleaning out an old garage. I’ll have maybe a pickup worth of stuff to go to the dump. The GOT JUNK site says they don’t take paint. I need to get rid of some paint. I need to know that whoever takes the stuff won’t just drop it into the nearest ravine. Any suggestions?

littlebrowndogParticipantMaybe rent a U Haul van ( not truck) for $19.95 plus mileage, or that’s what it used to be. One or two trips all by yourself and cheaper than Got Junk, and you will know it was done properly.

KatherineLParticipantbrowndog: I think I’m going to need help loading and unloading. It would also be nice to have a driver who knows the way to the new waste station.
herongrrrl: I’d be happy to recycle this paint, but it’s sat in an unheated garden shed several winters. I doubt it’s any good.
Is there anyone out there who’d like to earn some money with a dump run?

Cosmo22ParticipantI went through this exact exercise last summer, as I had been putting off getting rid of over 100 cans of paint the previous owner left in our house/garage. She was a paint hoarder. The dump does not take paint (unless is is dried out in the can) and neither does the toxic waste department. The only option is to dry it out (using cat litter or they also sell granules that dry up paint at the home improvement store) and then either put it out for regular garbage pickup or do a garbage dump run that you are inquiring about here. I did the cat litter/garbage combo for a few weeks and then as my patience and cat litter started to run out I took a chance and posted the paint on the free section of craigslist. Much to my surprise I got rid of 80+ cans in 48 hours. I was upfront that the paint was about 7-10 years old, much of it had rust bits in it due to age and the colors were not modern, but people came for anything and everything from as far as Olympia. Listing the colors in the ad helped a lot because then you avoid all of the emails asking you if you have this or that color. It was amazing and I wish I had done it years ago. Good luck.

I was also assuming you have latex paint. If you have any oil paint, that needs to go to the hazardous waste facility, which is right by the regular dump.

KimberleyParticipantKatherine – I just got back from a dump run (rented a u-haul pick-up for the above-mentioned rates), and the new transfer station is easy to find (go to the SPU website, and click on the link for the South Transfer Station, the page has a link directly to google maps). Maybe some friend(s) or neighbour(s) can help you load/unload.
