AnonymousInactiveI would just like to say that the MOHAI is a really great source of information on our history, American History, Black History, etc… We made a visit there today and enjoyed it greatly and with the sunny weather it was a wonderful time.

KeithMemberAren’t they moving to South Lake Union, into the Naval Reserve Building next to the Wood Boat Center?

miwsParticipantKeith, Yes they are planning on moving to South Lake Union. I don’t remember the timeline off the top of my head, or actually if it’s a 100% done deal that they will be moving there.
.
They’ve been planning a move from their current location for quite some time now. Maybe close to ten years. They were going to move to the WA State Convention Center, and that space was used by the Seattle Library as a temp location for their Downtown branch as the new one was being built. I believe MOHAI actually owns the space, and was renting it out to SPL.
.
Being a native, and as much of a traditionalist I am, and that I generally hate to see change, i think a move to larger quarters is great. They could bring ,ore exibits out from “the back room”, plus a tie-in to the Maritime Museum will be great. Especially since the curent location will likely be affected by the 520 expansion/replacement plans.

seattlegolferMemberThe Convention center actually needs the space now vacated by the Seattle Library and will purchase it. When 520 went in, it completely cut off the museum from the South, eliminating the walking Olmstead park plan connecting the museum grounds within walking distance of Volunteer Park. The current site of MOHAI is the only staging area for the construction of the new 520 bridge so they must relocate. Work on the Lake Union seawall will be finished soon and I would expect MOHAI to move the Lake Union site within 3 years. I think MOHAI is one of the best historical museums in the country, very inovative and constantly changing to attract repeat visitors.
