Looking for a great stylist who knows how to cut my kids super curly hair…

    Any recommendations?

VAIN in West Seattle has curl specialists. They use the DevaCurl/CurlyGirl method, which is specific to bringing out the best in curly hair and ensuring it’s properly moisturized to avoid frizz and keep it soft. 206-535-2595. The front desk will be able to recommend someone based on your kid’s texture and age, as some are better with waves, some with spirals, and some with kinky curls. I also HIGHLY recommend picking up the book “Curly Girl” by Lorraine Massey (not only for girls) to learn about taking care of curls. I assume you don’t have curly hair by your post. :)

    Best of luck!!

I have very curly hair and have been going to Cindy at Tiffany’s hair salon on ALKI for over 15 years. She is the owner and does a great job with curly hair. 206-932-9131

Diane2726, I don’t know what your price expectations are but VAIN does NOT lower haircut prices for kids. I have a son with curly hair (he’s mixed – Cuban, African Am, and White), and I asked VAIN for a quote because they were doing such a good job on my own wavy/curly hair. The stylist they recommended for my son wanted $55 to cut his (short!) hair. Pretty shocking to me! I have taken him to several salons around W. Seattle and everyone says they can cut curly hair, but no one has done a very good job with my son’s texture and curl needs. Believe me, I’ve been shopping around locally for five years, ever since his hair really grew in. Tram’s, West Seattle Barber, Winners’, EcoBeauty, Season’s, and more. I don’t know what your child’s needs are (texture, curl density, etc) but we now go all the way to Burien for a fabulous cut from Loly’s (146th & 1st ave). She’s fantastic! She listens, she’s METICULOUS, and works that shop like an octopus. It’s meticulously clean, bright, and she doesn’t push products on you. She charges $14 for kids cuts (includes before/after shampoo, and she spends a good FORTY-FIVE mins on my son’s head), $16 for my husband’s meticulous fade (which looks even better than what the boys serve up at the shops on Rainier), and she charges $18 for women. She speaks Spanish and a little English, but her husband who helps run the salon speaks perfect English. She offers color (her specialty) AND does waxing and pedicures. Seriously, this girl is busy. She and her husband are the nicest couple in the world and I’m so glad we found them! I do realize I used the word “meticulous” three times, but she’s just that good. She’s open 7 days a week, too! Her number is (206) 423-2385.

Good luck in your search! Those of us with specific care needs, we are loyal to good service providers when we find them!

Per sacatosh’s comment, I too recommend the DevaCurl line and the CurlyGirl info (which you can pretty much get the gist of from online sources). I’m a No-Poo fan and either use the chem-free DevaCurl products or use my own baking soda solution to wash my curls. I also use the DevaCurl conditioning cleanser on my son’s hair. It makes curls HAPPY.

Thanks for all your input. .I appreciate it. I do have super curly hair as well, but I just run and get the 12 haircut ..busy mom thing. Whenever someone cuts my kids thick curly hair, they brush it straight and it gets all frizzy. I’m the mom who stands behind the stylist with a spray bottle and a jar of curl cream getting their curls back..yes, that’s me you see.

Mercy moi, I am going to go for your recommendation… Maybe I’ll treat myself as well

A friend of mine got great curly hair info from the curly hair subreddit! Look in the right side bar for lots if links to beginner info and how to determine your specific curl type. After you get a feel for the nature of the posts, you might also ask for Seattle recommendations there as well. No doubt there’s folks from the Puget Sound region all over reddit!

I should add, I’m not curly haired though I try really hard to pretend with mousse. :) I got phenomenal skincare advice from the skincare subreddit!

Just had to chime in. I also have been using DevaCurl products for years, after trying almost every other curly hair line out there. The products aren’t cheap if you’re used to drug/discount store products, but a little goes a long way.

I also highly recommend VAIN, but I do agree they are very expensive. I have been seeing Liza at VAIN Downtown for about 12 years and I admit she costs a pretty penny. She is the most experienced curly hair stylist there and she mentors other stylists. She doesn’t work at West Seattle salon (I would dance with glee if she did!), but she’s probably mentored some of the stylists there. So, you could get in with one of the newer stylists and save some money. Also, keep in mind that your cut includes a touch-up trim (I think it’s ideally 4-5 weeks later, but they will stretch it out for curlies – I usually go 7-8 weeks.)So, it’s almost like getting 2 for 1 haircut.

I see TT at Vain in WS for my curly hair (here 2 days a week and also Belltown). VAIn also give you a free trim in 4-6 weeks which is awesome for my bob-length hair. The price isn’t so bad when you only pay every other time. I also use DevaCurl and No Poo and love them both. I traveled without them recently and could totally see a difference.

Regarding millerab6’s post – Just to clarify for those not familiar with the DevaCurl line – the No Poo *is* by DevaCurl. Perhaps her/his use of “DevaCurl” was referring to the conditioner. They have different conditioners. One Condition is their most popular, I believe. BEST CONDITIONER EVER. Love the No Poo, too. Sometimes I mix a little baking soda in it if my scalp needs some extra attention.

I just had an appointment with Liza at VAIN (see my previous post) today and she said she and a co-worker just recently held a very successful workshop on cutting mixed race curly hair. It’s great that more and more stylists are eager to learn how to work with our special hair needs!
