TishMemberHello,
I have a relatively small gardening project that I need help with. Basically, I have some garden beds in front of my driveway that need to be landscaped. I know the plants I want and even have a landscape design all mapped out — I just need someone who can come in, get the area ready, and plant the items.
So far, I’ve contacted two landscape companies and there was a $600.00 variance between quotes. Now I don’t know who to go with, so since you–my fellow West Seattlites–haven’t led me wrong in the past, I thought I would contact you again. I’m looking for someone who is reasonable, does good work, and easy to work with. Any recommendations?
If things work out, I’ll use this person or company to landscape my entire front yard next Spring.
Thank you in advance for your tips and suggestions!

jwwsParticipantHi Tish,
I highly recommend NW Botanicals – they are local and do both small and large jobs and we have had great experiences working with them.

TishMemberThey do indeed do lovely work. They came up with my landscape design and plant list. When I worked with them I found them to be knowledgeable, talented, and great communicators. In addition, I appreciated their extensive knowledge of native plants and keen artistic eye when it came to coming up with the overall design for the yard. All in all, I found both Pat and Dennis lovely and wonderful to work with.
That said, when I asked them to give me a price for planting the area in question, their bid was considerably higher than the other bid. In addition, I’m not exactly sure where they get their plants, but they quoted me a price that was at least $100.00 more than I could have purchased them for myself (at retail cost, mind you) at Freddies.
Now it could turn out that their bid was reasonable and the other bid was way off, but given the price difference in plant costs alone, I’m thinking that their experience comes at a high premium. I plan to get at least 2 more bids, so if it turns out that I’m wrong, I’ll be more than happy to post an update here.

anonymeParticipantTish, I know a great guy who graduated recently from a horticulture program. He did an internship at Harlow-Carr in England, and they liked him so well they asked him to come back for a full year. I’m sure he’d do a great job for you at a fraction of the cost of a landscape company. The only drawback is that he can’t haul materials for you. However, you can have it all delivered for free from West Seattle Nursery. If you post contact info, I will forward his info to you (and/or vice versa).
