How many of the “dream team” are still alive –
And Kate + 8 WHAT???? your marriage is over and you still want to “continue the show”??

JanSParticipantgreat advice :)
and if you don’t want to do that, how about parental controls…you CAN do that…they can watch the discovery channel ad infinitum :) along with the history channel…

yumpearsParticipantwhat are Kardashians?

CaitParticipantYou’ve got to learn to see the humor or you have to turn it off. I watch it, laugh, worry about future generations and then sleep soundly at night.

beachdrivegirlParticipantCait I am with you about watching it. It honestly cracks me up.
But I do agree with other posters that if you dislike the show that much either set parental controls or get rid of your cable.

swimcatMemberI don’t watch those two specific shows, but can only imagine the antics your girls are witnessing. Hopefully they are learning something from watching these- that it’s just a TV show and people should NOT behave that way in real life!!!!! I’d let them keep watching it, you should watch an episode or two, and then start a discussion with them about the show, what they think of the Kardashians’ behaviors, etc… It could be a good oppurtunity to have a healthy discussion with your daughters.

maplesyrupParticipantSorry Buddy, but why do you let them watch that crap?

bluebirdMemberTrash is always appealing. That’s why we’re so nosy about what are neighbors are putting in theirs, metaphorically speaking.

JoBParticipantbuddy..
i agree with m.. watch a few episodes with them if you can keep your judgments to yourself and ask them to explain things you don’t understand.
sometimes, the process of explaining to you is enough to make them see it differently.. and who knows…. maybe you will see it differently afterwards as well.
I know some parents try to insulate their kids from things in popular culture that they find offensive.. but it generally doesn’t work out well. All it does is create kids who thinks they are missing something and thus becomes even more fascinated.
I think one of the most difficult acts in parenting is the non-judgmental sharing of popular culture.. the plus is the conversations that open up when you let them talk and the way those conversations spill over into the rest of their lives.
I wish you well.. i think it gets harder every day as a parent to navigate popular culture with your kids and still instill the kind of values that make your kids both successful and fulfilled as adults.

CMPParticipantWhen I was in high school, the Real World on MTV had just started and I was completely hooked on that show. It was one of the first reality TV shows on air and it was just fascinating to me, but my Dad hated it, always giving us grief when we watched it. I haven’t had cable for seven years so I’ve missed out on the garbage reality shows but am aware of it through my People and US Weekly magazine addiction. These shows just sound horrendous but it’s like a train wreck that you can’t help but watch. You can only hope that your kids are laughing at it, and that they never want to grow up to be like that. If you watch with them, you can explain that real life isn’t quite so dramatic (unless they let it be) and try to put a different spin on it. Having a fit like my Dad used to clearly did nothing to keep me from watching all of that junk TV throughout college until I gave up the cable for good.

JenVMemberif you want your daughters to see what stupid, spoiled whores look like, then this is the show for them. Kim Kardashian is famous for having a sex tape. Her sisters are famous for, I guess, being her sisters. Their step-dad is, or used to be, Bruce Jenner.
I used to make fun of all the reality shows, then I got sucked in by the mother of all the SSW’s – Daisy of Love. From there it was a short walk to Rock of Love Bus. The appeal is in the sheer train-wreckedness of these people. Seen in that context, as an adult, it’s entertainment. I have no idea what a pre-teen would make of it all.

flowerpetalMemberI don’t get what the appeal is in watching the train-wreckedness of people. I can say for myself; (and I believe for others) that it is not just entertainment; but poisonous on a cellular level. I know this statement sounds woo-woo, I am having trouble explaining why it seems bad to watch.

JenVMemberschadenfreude? that’s why I watch. ;)

shed22ParticipantBuddy, I am glad you bumped this. Four years later, both concerns are irrelevant. You must be happy about that. I am. Now if we could just get rid of this, that, and the other . . . Check back in four years. They, too, will be gone.

JanSParticipantI can’t watch these shows at all. I get a headache from all the eye rolling :-

Alki WarriorParticipantI like Justin Bieber better. I wish he’d have his own show. I’d watch.
