I was looking for second opinion and was hoping someone knows of an experienced Immunologist here in Seattle. Thanks.

    Jiggers,

As usual I don’t have any personal experience with immunologists, but the Castle Connolly listings that U.S. News and World Report publishes shows these:

Leonard Altman, MD – UW Medical Center

William Henderson, Jr., MD – UW Medical Center

Mary Lisa Farrington, MD – UW Medical Center

Joyce K. Lammert, MD – Virginia Mason

Garrison Ayars, MD – Overlake Hospital

Michael Weiss, MD – Evergreen Hospital & Overlake

Ann Wanner, MD – Providence Everett

Arthur Vegh, MD – Tacoma General

My rare condition/disease is killing me. I am almost out of options. I have been going to Virginia Mason for over ten years now. Time to find someone who may have an answer.

Jiggers, try the UW . Being a teaching hospital they are more interested in figuring out your sort of case. At least they were with a friend of mine that also has a rare disease that is killing her. Not immune though. She also had good luck with doctors at the poly clinic.

Good luck to you. It is hard to get doctors interested enough to really look into things to help you.

    Jiggers,

For what it’s worth, the UW’s Altman and Henderson are mentioned in the Castle Connolly report as among the few dozen most highly regarded immunologists in the US, from peer recommendations. It’s a starting point.

Jiggers, I agree with Rod-n-odd, ;-) regarding the UW, based on the fact that they are affiliated with Harborview.

H’view has taken great care of me, on charity care, throughout these last couple of months with two bouts of pneumonia, and the related hospitalizations and aftercare.

My Doctor, is actually a fourth year UW Med student. I see her at H’view’s after hours Adult Medicine Clinic.

She has been absolutely wonderful in taking care of me; concerned not only with my present health issues, but with past ones, including wanting to be sure that the Leukemia I was treated for three and a half years ago is still in remission, and of any potential health issues as well.

She constantly amazes me with her knowledge, and the ability to share that knowledge without having to “look things up”.

She mentioned that one of the reasons she is able to be so thorough, is that she has a much lighter client load than “real” Drs. But I think that a huge part of it is that she actually cares.

She’ll be moving into that position herself in probably about another year, and I hope that she’s able to keep and utilize her passion to help her patients, and spend time with them, and not feel pressured to get them in and out as quick as possible.

Mike..my middle name is pneumoniA..:( I heard that Harbor View has better resources to help us and our situation. V.M’s social services sucks beyond belief. You know my current situation.I have emailed two immunologists this morning about my chronic lifelong medical conditions. Talk about depressing to write about yourself. I will contact the UW by phone later this week. Try and live through life when your body can’t produce natural anti-bodies…:( That’s only the tip of the iceberg of my medical conditions. There is no cure for it. All my tests come back inconclusive. My blood levels are dropping at an alarming rte. My current platelet count is just about 22,000 You can do the math. I’m 47 and afraid I won’t seee 50. Living outdoors doesn’t help either…:( That’s why I’m cranky on the blog somedays.

Sounds like you’ve not had the best of luck at VM, but I can’t say enough good things about Joyce Lammert. She’s been my doc there for 20+ years. Have you tried her?

Jiggers, If you can get to the Factoria area, Dr. Carl Brodie is AMAZING. He’s the first rheumatologist/immunologist I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot) who actually believes me when I tell him what’s happening with my symptoms. He approaches treatment from a balanced perspective — symptoms vs side effects, and we work together to decide what level of each is tolerable. He’s kind and smart, and doesn’t look at me like I’m crazy when my symptoms show a weird combination of two separate auto-immune diseases. He just says “hmmm,” and then tells me he’s seen that twice before. Somehow it’s reassuring to know he’s seen it before and he doesn’t think it’s all in my head.

Anyway, give him a call. He’s old school so no email, but you’ll like him, I think. And if you’re bussing it, he’s just off 90, one exit past factoria.

Factoria is a bit out of my way, but I will see if I can converse with him over the phone first. Thanks.

I cannot recommend him any more highly, and I’ve seen some of the “big names” in this area. When he found out that a mostly-male disease ran in the women in my family, he asked if we’d be willing to give blood samples so he could see if there’s anything uncommon in there that’s passing it on the female side.

At any rate, if you do decide you want to go see him and getting there becomes a problem, say the word and I’ll find a way to help. Sacatosh@gmail.com is mine.

    More info for him:

My primary care doctor sees him too, AND my dental hygienist. It took me 12 years to find the right combination of doctors and medications, but I feel pretty darned good most of the time now. . :-)
