    Question for the bike folks.

Saw this on craigslist – http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/bik/1775976327.html

What would a new one of these typically go for? The asking price is $300 and I wondered if that seemed kinda high.

    Hi MargL,

I don’t know the general value of that (or any for that matter ;-) ) brand of bike, but just a reminder to be careful of what you’re buying on CL.

I know that probably goes without saying, but the ad struck me as a bit weird. They’ve only had it three weeks, and now all of a sudden they’ve decided to buy a car.

The grammar is odd too. Kinda like what one would expect to see in an ad where they have to send money out of the Country (and I know you wouldn’t fall for that. ;-) ).

But also, the reason I’m mentioning all of this, is because a buddy of mine had his bike stolen out of our building’s secure storage area 2 or 3 weeks ago.

I called him about this bike, and it doesn’t sound like his, but he’s going to check it out.

As a cyclist, bike mechanic and a 6 year veteran of a bike shop…

    That bike is worth $50.

Really velo-nut, really? I think without question and with much experience in biking, that without a doubt I could get $55 for it. But seriously though, some people really try to rip off others on CL. I once saw a lady on CL selling two “next, FS mountain bikes” (from walmart) for 300 each. Yet on the other hand I picked up a 2005 FS Epic last year for 650 and LOVE IT!

What size bike are you looking for?

I bought this bike new almost ten years ago for about $200 (a red one, in fact). It’s an adequate set of wheels for what I do…but seeing the bike valued at $50 (or even $55 :)) doesn’t surprise me.
