Schmitz Park DadParticipantWe have had our internet service with Comcast for the past 10+ years. They keep raising our rates and I think we have finally had it with them. The best they can offer us is $49.99/month for 75 MB internet + $10/month cable model rental. We do stream videos, so I am thinking we would need greater than 25 MB speed.
Any recommendations on high speed internet providers in West Seattle?

WSBKeymasterWe have both Comcast and CenturyLink since we have to have redundancy (also a Verizon mi-fi). I do most of our production (video, photos, upload/download) and prefer the latter, though the performance of the former improved in the last year or so. Does depend on your neighborhood … we are uphill and east of Lincoln Park. Good luck with your decision! – TR

Schmitz Park DadParticipantI think CenturyLink said we would have to go with the more expensive fiber optic if we went with them.

oestredParticipantIf you stick with ComCast, buy your own cable modem and save the $10 a month. A good one can be had for about $100. No need to hand money over to ComCast forever. They have a list of supported models on their web site.

Schmitz Park DadParticipantWe definitely need to lose the modem rental. But hoping to drop Comcast and go with another provider.

FranciParticipantI would recommend reading the thread on Cenutry Link before going with them. Buyer beware!

redblackParticipanti have the slowest DSL for internet – 1.5 mbs – and i stream to a vTuner, 2 smart teevees, 2 androids, and various e-readers just fine. i sometimes have to settle for SD video on the older teevee, but the tiny new one does HD well.
i think a lot of the advertising about speed is hokum voodoo b.s. in my experience, it depends on the age of the device and having good and current ethernet and wi-fi hardware and firmware.
i bought my gateway (DSL router/wi-fi/modem all in one box) about 10 years ago from a third party, and started service through qwest in the late 1990’s. it’s the old work horse of my home network. c-link gets $29.00 per month (plus $20 for land line) and my third party ISP gets $16 for 5 mailboxes and internet throughput.
i have an ethical problem with using c-link or comcast for internet. i don’t quite trust them. and my local ISP is always on.
i can obviously go faster for a modest increase, but after having read the c-link thread, i’m holding my fire, since my network is airtight secure and stable. i’ve started looking for faster gateways, but c-link might make me drop my ISP if i upgrade. fiber hasn’t hit my block yet, but it’s approaching. i’d love to do that for teevee, as well, as long as it’s as reasonably priced as c-link claims, which i doubt highly. also, c-link’s apparently pretty inept at taking orders.
so to end the review, DSL is a solid medium in my house, with no perceptible slow-downs or rush hour; and while it’s not cheap for what it is, it’s within my budget. it ain’t broke, and i ain’t gonna fix it.
just my $.02.

anonymeParticipantI’ve been going back and forth with the CL supervisor (see my rant thread) on switching to stand alone internet. They really want me to switch to fiber at $29.95 per month, plus a lot of additional ‘upgrade’ fees. (They also want to charge me an upgrade fee for keeping my old DSL and canceling the landline. Here’s the catch: price goes up to $74, for internet alone, after one year. Pretty outrageous increase, if you can even believe it.
I hear your frustration with Comcast, but it will only increase with CL. We all need to lobby our city council for municipal broadband.June 20, 2016 at 11:25 pm #848276
T60.12ParticipantI’ve had CenturyLink for 9 yrs; I pay $74 for high-speed and land line. I’ve had zero problems with it in all the time, except one, and they came to the house and fixed it for free. The outside wire coating from the mainline had frayed. I did buy a faster speed WIFi modem on Amazon.
Before that I had Comcast (until I didn’t want to expose my kids to cable TV advertising or Disney Channel’s cute snark – then it was excruciating to try to cancel CC service; for that reason alone I would hesitate to be sucked into Comcast again), before that DirecTV (pre-Internet).
I like CL. I work from home and use it for streaming work video and conference calls all the time and it never drops.
We stream lots of video and music on multiple devices and it’s very consistent. The signal is strong enough that I can get it in my yard, front and back.- This reply was modified 8 years, 11 months ago by T60.12.

anonymeParticipantT60, is the $74 you pay before fees and taxes, or after? Part of a recent bundle, or ongoing?
I’ve had few problems with CL service, at least on the technical end. The billing, rate structure, and customer service are a different story. -
