SC46ParticipantWe too often hear about the transgressions of the SPD but don’t often thank them when they do their job.
Last weekend my brother’s 4Runner was stolen from right in front of my house in North Admiral. After we called the police, Officer Keating showed up within 5 minutes and took a report. He informed us of process and we left feeling listened to and like the police cared. We weren’t exactly hopeful the vehicle would be recovered.
Last night, we got a call that the vehicle had been found–down on S. Portland and 8th Ave S with two guys in it and two guys around it. It was full to the brim with laptops, saws, boots, etc. The interior door panels were ripped off and the thing was trashed.
When we showed up, Officer A. Constantin was there to inform us of the situation and share our options. He couldn’t have been a more positive face for the SPD. He patiently answered questions, shared insights, and was the friendly police officer we all like to encounter. Makes me confident we have the right people out there doing necessary police work.

WSBKeymasterThanks for sharing your story! Sorry to hear about the theft. Anybody reading this, just a reminder that we post stolen vehicles (including bicycles as well as motorized vehicles) in Crime Watch, and that’s led to some reunions too. Hope it won’t happen again to the OP here; if it happens to you, after you’ve reported the theft to police, e-mail us info (including photo if available) to editor@westseattleblog.com.
SC46 – Do you know whether any of the people found near the vehicle were arrested?

SC46ParticipantUnfortunately only one was arrested (had a needle on him). The other that entered the vehicle was let loose because he claimed he was just getting a ride. The other two around the vehicle didn’t have IDs and weren’t suspects for stealing the vehicle. The man that was arrested was booked, processed, and released before we even got a tow-truck to take the vehicle away.
The police officer insisted on waiting with us until we got the tow because he thought that if he left, the man that was arrested for being in the vehicle (and presumably the one who stole it) would come and plead with us to get his belongings (mostly stolen) out of the vehicle. The officer said that if we both left, the car would be re-taken by the guy and moved somewhere else (it was drivable) hard to find.
Apparently the Mayor, the City Council, and the City Attorney have no interest in penalties for these crimes, so if they are arrested they’re released shortly thereafter and offend again.
EDIT: One tip that the officer recommended was installing a kill-switch in any older vehicle that uses a traditional key (rather than a remote-fob).
