elgregoMemberI’d been shaving my head for 15 years, but a few months ago I started to grow it out. I’ve been to a WS barber shop a couple times since then, and was kind of surprised to pay $17 to get a 5-minute trim on the sides and back.
My questions to y’all are: 1) Is this normal? I remember paying $5 for a similar trim 15 years ago. Is inflation really that bad?
2) Is there a cheaper place to get a cut, and it just happens that the place I randomly picked was more expensive than normal?
A friend of mine goes to a unisex salon in White Center to get his cut for $8 or so, but he speaks some Spanish and they don’t speak English and I have an issue, real or imagined, going to anything with “unisex” or “salon” in the title. Call me crotchety and old fashioned, insecure with my masculinity or whatever, but I like barber shops.

changingtimesMemberfor a cheapie but good job go to the asian school on california, near the 7-ll in the junction, across from the Than Bros Pho place. I dont know if its 5 dollars but its cheap! make sure you ask for a shampoo before the shave becuase they shampoo for like 20 minutes with the massage and everything!!!! i know its a school but i dont see how they can mess up a shave job and there is a teacher watching at all times…i dont know if this would be your cup of tea but the people are nice :)

JanSParticipantok…you’re crotchety and old-fashioned, insecure with your masculinity or whatever ;-) Hey….you said….
Umm….was this barbershop on Calif Ave..near the swedish physicians bldg? Just curious. I’m a woman, so it works differently for me. I have short hair, and go to Westside Barber on Calif. Ave. I pay 20 bucks for a trim…as opposed to 55 bucks at the “salon” I was going to, for the same kind of cut…so it’s all a matter of degrees. If this is not the place that you went to, call them and ask about price…I really like the people there…

JanSParticipantand here’s a list of others…the second review… Admiral Barber…has some prices stated…so…maybe the place that you went to isn’t too far off the mark…

charlabobParticipantWestside has prices on their myspace page too — $20 for short. Your place sounds reasonable given what the bob has paid since we’ve lived here. 15 years is a lifetime :-)
JanS, is Westside too incredibly hip for the likes of the charlabobs? I like their mascot and their reviews and especially their red barber chair–and the bob is looking for a new place. (I’m sticking with Illusions…but I could go with him to pet the dog.)

JanSParticipantabsolutely not…they’re great in there. I see Brandon…he’s there Tues-Saturday…and appreciates an appt. , instead of a drop in….:)

HuindekmiParticipantPrices have definitely gone up along with the rent these guys pay for their spaces. $15 – $20 isn’t out of the norm
Personally, I get my really short cut done at Ralph’s – next to Zatz on California. They’re friendly, quick, affordable and do a nice job.

jkboisonMemberMy husband always goes to West side Barber. He loves it they make him look like a rockstar and set him up w/ great smelling palmaide. He likes Frankie (the owner) the best and she always as great stories to tell him…

charlabobParticipantThe bob went to Westside Friday night; got the best haircut since I’ve known him (from Heidi). As he said, “She did what I asked.” Amazing how rare that is — he looks great and he’ll definitely be back. Thank you forumites!
