JanSParticipantand that’s why they need as many customers from here as they can get…I think it’s great that they’ve decided to do this. And the more of these types of businesses that are supported, the more the “other” types may take the hint and move out… I don’t play pinball, but I absolutely LOVE ice cream, and I’ll be sure to drive out there and get some :)

celeste17ParticipantGee we could all go to Zippy’s for a burger and then drive down the road a ways and then go for ice cream and pinball. Then we can go and boo at the adult stores and the customers who visit. I think this is just what White Center needs. Maybe the Rat City Roller Girls can come and slam some heads together?

WSBKeymasterI was talking about this with Justin and Ann when I interviewed them this afternoon. My belief is that families visiting this business will help chase away the unsavories rather than the other way around. There’s a nightclub on one side and a Vietnamese deli on the other, plus a sheriff’s storefront just a few doors down. For anyone who hasn’t taken a close look at this block lately, many businesses (particularly on the northeast side of the block have had facelifts lately). It’s not half as rundown as the area looked just a year or so ago. – TR
p.s. and it’s not too much different from going downtown and having to walk by the Lusty Lady en route to Pike Place Market or SAM.

JanSParticipanta vietnamese deli…hmm…that sounds interesting, too, may just have to check that out…

JenVMemberStan’s Adult Super Store was there first, and has been there for a long time. Full Tilt chose to move in across the street. therefore, no one has the right to b*tch about it! that’s all we need is a bunch of people trying for force out a locally owned – albeit unsavory – business just because they don’t like it across the street from where their kids play pinball.

TheHouseMemberJen, don’t be pissed if the sex shop goes out of business. I know several places around Tukwila and Tacoma that you can purchase your French Ticklers at.
I would be upset to if you tried to force me away from the the only thing that I could converse with.
June 19, 2008 at 3:27 pm #628010
JenVMemberOnce again, House totally misses the point. Not too surprising, he’s trying to bring this discussion down to his level of intelligence by denigrating me personally rather than looking at the issue at hand. Which is, this shop- and all shops like it in that general area – have been in business for a lot longer than Full Tilt. Full Tilt chose to move into that neighborhood. Now people are whining that “waaaah, there’s an adult shop across the street! let’s go bust some heads in!”
Those businesses, while you may not agree with what they sell or how they do business – have just as much right to be there. Stan’s in particular has been there since I moved here in 1992 and probably longer than that. They are locally owned businesses, which I thought everyone here loved. Oh, that’s right- this is the NIMBY capital of the world. Just because you don’t agree with how they do business, doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to be there. Maybe you all should b*tch at Full Tilt for moving there, and not fault the businesses that were there first.

JanSParticipantnow, now…we’re talking ice cream here – lol…play nice…they can all live happily together, I bet :)
and House…what’s wrong with a french tickler? (hey, I’m just askin’ – lol)

inactiveMemberI stopped by Full-Tilt last week and Justin told me that the Triangle Pub one-half block up across Roxbury on Delridge has a new owner. Cafe Rozella is just north of them. So, Full-Tilt is not anchoring the revitalizion effort by itself.
Justin told me that the Triangle Pub basically stood empty for a year because “Mac”, the new owner, refused to serve the ultra hardcore clientelle that had been freely served by the previous owner. Those folks have moved on.
I went into the Triangle to confirm this. The place is nice! Mac has plans to reface the front of the uniquely shaped building. Plus, they’ve rocked the whole zeitgeist with their t-shirts: Living the Dream in White Center. They have a full burger and sandwich menu, including Philly Cheese steak! They’ve got musicians stopping by for jazz jams, on Friday’s I think Rita told me. Or, sip on a Drop Top or Stella while folks catch a bit of a Mariner’s game or wait for the kids at the pinball parlor.
Ricardo and Leticia at Cafe Rozella started the trend. They have been drawing positive foot traffic for a couple of years. They’ve got GREAT live music and have established themselves as the north anchor.
So, Full-Tilt isn’t exactly doing this by themselves. Folks who recognize that paradox abounds in urban hoods will support these businesses. Patronizing a wonderful shop like Full-Tilt is perhaps an opportunity to model for kids how discriminating, positive choices are made in a complex world. Good lessons, perhaps, if one has a mind to think of that way. Perhaps.
Folks have to decide what works for them, of course, but I think actually experiencing it once or twice to see if works for them is a possible approach. I mean, I personally cannot resist the adventure of finding out what a mango chili paleta (sp?) is all about? But, I am infamously weak about such things. ;)

KayleighMemberThat strip has been a seedy dump since before I was born.
Sometimes, gentrification is a GOOD thing, to me. And the ice cream sounds yummy. :-)

WSMomParticipantBlighted Madison block at turning point
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008005703_madison19m.html
Having lived just three blocks from Deano’s nearly twenty years ago, I can assure you that those lost businesses will not be mourned by law abiding folks.
We definitely intend to stop by and enjoy “Full Tilt” this summer. I am grateful that these business people are putting their hard work into improving our neighborhood instead of shrugging and leaving it to the porn purveyors.
June 19, 2008 at 5:06 pm #628015
JenVMemberWSMom- if gentrification happens, it happens. It is not up to “concerned citizens” to become an angry, torch-waving mob just because they don’t like what a business is selling.
Oh, and lots of “law abiding” folks visit those stores…they’re not illegal, y’know.
June 19, 2008 at 6:01 pm #628016
WSMomParticipantWho’s talking about angry, torch-waving mobs? I’m just talking about taking my kids to get some ice cream and hoping that more businesses that I would frequent will move in.
Within one year of Deano’s closing, prostitution and drug dealing were pretty much nonexistent at 23rd and Madison. That corner had been a blight for decades, and I know we can’t attribute the cause of all of the social ills to the presence of Deano’s, but to me there’s an interesting correlation.
June 19, 2008 at 6:02 pm #628017
WSBKeymasterWSD, that explains the cool new sign on Triangle Pub. I was out photographing some area businesses a couple weeks ago and my Triangle Pub photo is already outdated because of that new neon – gotta get back to shoot a new one!
June 19, 2008 at 7:20 pm #628018
elgregoMemberKinda bummed they don’t have plain old chocolate chip. :(
June 19, 2008 at 7:29 pm #628019
charlabobParticipantLemme see — am I getting this right? JenV is supporting the right of legal businesses to exist and House is saying, “NIMBY?” And snarking at JenV for her opinion???
Hey, House — isn’t this just free enterprise at its finest? And can’t you park, go in the ice cream store, buy cones for your kids, play games, and leave–without being inexhorably drawn to the porn palaces? Maybe you could wait ’til the kids aren’t with you to buy your dildoes.
June 19, 2008 at 7:34 pm #628020
JoBParticipantChange the signs a bit on the outside of a building… which will happen one way or another if more reputable businesses move into the area..
and a sex toys shop looks like any other business…I think you would be surprised at the clientèle of some of the sex toy shops… not at all what you might expect. The string of seedy degenerates furitively ducking through the door is nothing more than a cliche unless illegal activities are encouraged.
A sign on the front restricting ages lets those with children know it isn’t a good place for them.
If an ice cream shop attracts families, you can be sure it will also attract increased patrolling by the police department.
s long as hookers aren’t hanging out in front soliciting business..
we need to honor any local business that makes a commitment to it’s community.
June 20, 2008 at 1:42 am #628021
JeraldParticipantI used to stop at that Dilletante outlet occasionally (miss it!)and never had any problem in the neighborhood. I think it’s an opportunity to teach kids some street smarts and experience different cultures.
I remember pointing out the porn shop to my teenage son and saying he was almost old enough to go in there. Boy was he mortified.
June 20, 2008 at 1:44 am #628022
AnonymousInactiveI’m not getting what House said that is wrong. Stating it wouldn’t be his first choice destination to take his family, seems reasonable. It’s an observation, not a call to arms people.
June 20, 2008 at 1:47 am #628023
charlabobParticipantJT — did you read House7? House1 was an opinion–House7 was just more, um, House :-)
June 20, 2008 at 1:50 am #628024
AnonymousInactiveI did, but #7 came after he was told he had no right to bitch. I don’t think the OP was bitching, and I do think he has a right to his opinion.
Plus, the anger seems directed towards his opinion of the location, not his sense of humor.
June 20, 2008 at 2:06 am #628025
charlabobParticipantTry as I may to speak for the world, I can only speak for myself here. I went to a huge amount of effort, spent many valuable seconds, writing something humorously snarky with a touch of sarcastic irony. You mean, my humor failed??? Damn! That never happens.
As I keep saying, I think everyone has a right to hi(s/r) opinion — and everyone has a right to an opinion about that opinion and … and yes, much as it pains me, my opinion about opinions includes House.
Once again, we’re in violent agreement, JT — hard as we try, we just can’t stop agreeing. It has to be because we’re both almost always right. :-)
June 20, 2008 at 4:57 am #628026
TheHouseMemberJT, thanks for hitting the nail on the head. I never said anything negative about the sex shops, I never said anything about making the sex shops close, I never said not in my backyard (although I do agree with that) and I certainly never resorted to making comments about calling people to arms.
I just consider those comments liberal distortion. The more they try to think the more feedback they hear in their heads.
And when did making a comment become bitching? Jen, when we meet up at the next gathering, I’ll add “bitching” to the list of words you apparently need defined.
And for the record, I do plan on supporting this business as long as they have a great product despite where they are located. I do agree with westseattledood that Cafe Rozella adds to the neighborhood, so you’re correct in stating that there are a few other businesses that add value.
My personal favorite is Kiki Corona. WTF is that place anyway?
June 20, 2008 at 12:27 pm #628027
KayleighMemberWSMom, they oughta burn sage or perform some other blessing before they rebuild on the Deano’s site. Talk about bad karma. I used to feel sick when I walked by there (sounds woo-woo, I know.)
I’m just scratching my head at a thread that manages to defend seedy porn stores, insult liberals, and discuss ice cream.
This is a weird place sometimes.
June 20, 2008 at 1:45 pm #628028
charlabobParticipantI think we’re called eclectic, KL — that, or, um, slightly disorganized :-)
