As if we didn’t already get enough good things from our wonderful public libraries . . .

I went in to the SW Library Saturday and noticed a sign in the lobby:

                    “Free Tax Help Upstairs”

I’ve already done my taxes for this year, but I thought I’d go up and test them to see if they knew their stuff. A very friendly gentleman answered my questions about the “self-employment tax” quickly and correctly, right off the top of his head.

Although I can usually do my taxes without assistance, I still think tax forms are confusing (hell, the whole process is confusing) and I’m glad this help is available should I ever need it.

Sure, I suppose I could call the IRS help line, or leave it to some computer tax program to figure it all out for me, but whenever I have a tricky question, I’d much rather talk to a someone face to face. Wouldn’t you?

Anyway . . . free tax help is available at the

      SW Seattle Library

      9010 35th Ave SW

      Tel: 206-684-7455

from 10:30 AM to 4 PM

Every Saturday from now until April 16.

It is being sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

According to what library staff told me, drop-ins are welcome, but I would advise calling ahead to make an appointment anyway, because when I dropped in there were already a couple of people ahead of me in line. (I think there were three or four people there giving assistance.)

The tax help is not available from any other libraries in the West Seattle area — only the SW Library — although AARP and other groups may have similar programs at other non-library locations in West Seattle.

Good karma to AARP for doing this for the community.

And good karma to the Seattle Public Library for providing the space.

    David,

Thank you SO much for posting this. I’m filing this year for the first time as a freelance artist and I’m scared stiff to mess it up or miss any exemptions. I was hoping to find some face time with someone who could help me and I’m hoping this pans out.

Thanks for the heads up, you rock!

If the SW Library is inconvenient for you, or if Saturdays are, there are 10 other Library branches providing free tax help service on various days of the week. Most of them offer a choice of drop-in or appointment.

Note: Tax help at the Central Library is provided by United Way.

There is also a Free Tax Site at Neighborhood house in Highpoint. First come first served on Thursday night and Sunday. I would recommend going before the April rush.
