The 4th will be here in just a few weeks. I expect to see less enforcement than ever this year. Instead of having to drug my pets (and myself) senseless, I’m thinking of just taking them away for a little vacation during the week when Arbor Heights transforms into Beirut. Anyone have an idea for an escape plan? I resent having to be driven from my home due to illegal behavior, but the options are slim.

Does anyone know if charges can be filed against an individual based on a personal complaint? The renters one house over set off an M-80 about 10 feet from my bedroom window last year. I almost had a heart attack. It seems like there should be some action that can be taken. If the police can’t or won’t enforce fireworks violations, what is a citizen to do?

I couldn’t agree with you any more about the fireworks. I don’t think the police have the ability to do anything about it. Its sad. I know Carson will cower and hide in the basement for a few days. You might want to try a little shame, maybe video tape them and post the videos.

Homer goes shopping for fireworks at the Li’l Valu-Mart, with a

clerk that looks almost like Apu.

The clerk shows Homer into his stockpile of fireworks.

“Any red-blooded, flag-fearing American would love the M-320.

Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small

    part of it.”

I also agree with you, anonyme. My dogs are not affected by the fireworks but it still burns me that people get away with setting them off when they are not supposed to. Only suggestion I have is to go to Canada where they don’t celebrate the 4th.

I know in areas of eastern Washington the fireworks are banned due to dry conditions and they enforce over there due to brush fires. We do not enforce here because of mob mentality. I was at Hamilton Viewpoint a couple of years back and there was a group with a tent with alcohol flowing and the police just looked the other way. I left before the fireworks were over due to a volitile confrontation with a large SUV that pulled up minutes before the fireworks started and the occupants crawled out the sunroof to the top and blocked about 100 peoples view. Crowd gatherers were starting to get physical trying to pull them off the car roof. I worried about gunfire possibilities so I left. Good luck with your dogs…I have a cat that just hates the fireworks too!

Canada! Now there’s an idea…too bad my dog and two cats don’t have passports ;)

I actually had to put out a fireworks related fire in my alley a few years back. It was behind my neighbors house, he was out of town, and the fire department took two hours to show up. Aside from the noise and disruption, fireworks are extremely dangerous – which is why they’re illegal. I’m tired of having to climb up on my roof to remove smoldering rockets, or having some piece of flaming metal shoot past my face while I’m in my own yard. It’s ridiculous. It used to be that kids would light some sparklers, set off a few snakes, or maybe a couple of small firecrackers. Now it’s all big, dangerous and stupid – and I don’t just mean the fireworks. Add plenty of alcohol and BANG.
