Slightly past 7:30 this morning, I got one of those recorded calls saying the IRS is filing a lawsuit and I need to call immediately. Just warning others that this is a scam and if you get such a call, don’t respond to the number they leave on their recording: 206 445-0616. The IRS doesn’t work that way. The English was pretty good, but there were a few things that were tip-offs to the caller being from another country, such as leaving out the word “the” in critical places and not understanding U.S. collection call rules.

Did you call? It’s important to call. If each and every person called and if everyone pressed “1” on those recorded scam calls, they would not be able to filter the noise from the rubes and the whole industry dies.

dhg, are you serious? (please note: the tone with which I type that is friendly and sincere, not sarcastic) ;-)

Although I like the intent of that idea, I’d be a bit worried they would figure they have “a live one”, for continued, future harassment, much like we are warned about in responding to spam e-mails, or told NOT to reply “Stop”, or anything, to spam texts.

    Thanks, Tan.

Ongoing (and they won’t stop until people stop falling for it, so the more info out there, the better!) … story earlier this year:

I found an IRS fraud website and reported the date, time and return number.

I do it when I have the time. I used to get a number of calls “from Microsoft” telling me I have a virus on my machine. I’ve led them on, pretending to follow their advice for giving them remote control and ending with asking them how they feel about being scammers. They always stay in character and insist they are not scammers. I don’t know if it has resulted in even more phone calls but it is satisfying to take up their time.

    That sounds like fun, dhg.

I would text back to the spam texters to go expletive delete themselves, if it wouldn’t result in them (or other spammers) sending more.

I had two or three incidents in recent months of getting spam texts. My AT&T GoPhone plan dings me .20 per text, so getting multiple spam texts can add up fast.

Unfortunately, I can’t block unwanted numbers, best I can do is report them to AT&T.

It’s good if you have some time for that, dhg. These crooks have been ruining us since years ago. I even tired of reading all the complaints. The number above also calls some other people, though. I read their complaints at http://www.whycall.me/206-445-0616.html. It is good to know that nowadays there are so many news and forums that talk about their tricks, so we can be aware about these kind of calls.
