c.c.MemberThanks AlkiSandi for bringing up some good memories of the old days…let’s not forget the PennyLane record store that used to be in the junction and Hoolighans store where you could get all the “penny candy” for a penny, really. I think it used to be next to where Alki Bike and Board is now. Does anyone remember what Alki Bike used to have in it…can’t quite remember

herongrrrlParticipantI remember the N&N…that store just fascinated me when I was small. And Merediths 5 & Dime and the G O Guy where Arts West is now…I wish stores like that still existed. Did I miss mention of the Junction Feed and Seed where the Bikram Yoga studio is now? They used to sell pet fish and hermit crabs there too. And didn’t the Wells Fargo at the Admiral Junction used to be a clothing store at one point?

GABBOTTMemberOkay first things first… WOW! My dad worked at the Beach Broiler. I believe I was 6 at the time. What a flood of memories just hearing that name brought. I lived between Beacon and Rainier avenues. But to hit the rest of ya’lls posts… I lived in West Seattle as well (before it was cool lol) I went to Gatewood Elementary off of California Ave. Fairmount Park Elem. at the end of 38th. Hmmmm lets see here… I went to Madison Middle School further of California Ave. or just off of. What a blast from the past. I looked it up on Google and the 7-11 that I played the Joust arcade game at after school is still there and the Mc Donalds at the other end where I had free french fries for two weeks from the flyers I was SUPPOSED to put in the papers for my paper route. Well till I got caught lol Does the P.I. still exist? DAGGUMM! I’m not gonna get any sleep tonight now and bore my sons to tears with dorky stories of “The good Old Days” Thank all of you who posted for bringing it all back

katmanParticipantI grew up here and remember Westwood Vil was swamp and farmland. In my teens I delivered bark, soil and hay for Junction Feed and Seed.(now yoga) I also graduated with the owners daughter. I bought my first car at Andreson Chysler/Plymouth where Bank of America is on Alaska across from Gene Fiedler Chevrolet, up the street from Foodland grocery with a balcony cafeteria.

Spring ChickenMemberRemember before Denny’s it was a Sambo’s? Then on Admiral was Mr. Ed’s cafe, good breakfasts!

F16CrewChiefMemberBorn and raised here in West Seattle. Went to Fairmount Park Elementary, but never had a class with the legendary Mr. Jensen. Knew him very well though.
Grouchos was the best!
Plaid Penguin
Triple Play
Turn About
The Hobby Shop
Olsens, before they shrunk and Starbucks moved in.
I’m very happy to see the skate parks go in, but sad to see the old secret BMX tracks gone. The first was off of Bonair hill in the woods and the second was off of Jefferson hill going down towards Beach Dr. The one off of Jefferson even had a awesome rope swing.

GABBOTTMemberWell DAGGUMM Crew Chief!!!
I HAD THE ONE AND ONLY PADDLE SWINGIN’ SCARIEST TEACHERS OF ALL TEACHERS… THE Legendary Mr. Jensen lol Ya know… He turned out to be one of the BEST teachers a kid could ever have. Let me see… I believe that was 1980… 6th grade.

F16CrewChiefMemberMr. Jensen was scary, but you’re correct, he was one of the best. He was old school and cared deeply about the kids. He was a friend of my family, so i got to know him and his family outside of school. He was a really cool person! We need more Mr. Jensens in the country.
August 30, 2012 at 1:52 am #687915
me on 28th Ave SWParticipantMr Jensen was my favorite teacher too (77-78)! I miss him, but am always happy to run into his family out and about in West Seattle. He really wanted the best for kids.

Genesee HillParticipantI believe that there was a Datsun dealer on Delridge in 1968 or so…
August 30, 2012 at 3:04 pm #687917
happywalkerParticipantYes there was GenHill. It was where SW plumbing is now, just across the south side street from the Delridge basketball court on Delridge.

dmkParticipantThanks Mike, I remember Taco Time but wasn’t that in the Tully’s location? I am thinking of a long dark bar with no windows and big heavy doors.

miwsParticipantAugust 31, 2012 at 3:20 am #687922
JanSParticipantthat was Tully’s Mike

FranciParticipantHmm I seem to recall a Chinese restaurant at Alki way back when.. If memory servers me correctly it was quite dark on the inside.. I can’t remember which block it was in.
August 31, 2012 at 4:14 pm #687926
happywalkerParticipantFranci, it was called the Golden Sun, the food was really good. My husband used to call it Chinese soul food. It was between the corner where the IGA to the west and the laundry mat on the east side of the block where Sunfish is now.
August 31, 2012 at 4:33 pm #687927
JanSParticipantyes, the Golden Sun is now the famous Bamboo Bar and Grill…
August 31, 2012 at 5:40 pm #687928
F16CrewChiefMemberI also remember when the West Seattle Street Fair was just called “The Sidewalk Sale”.
August 31, 2012 at 5:47 pm #687929
elikapekaParticipantI think the Starbucks is on the site of the old Pegasus before they moved down the block.
August 31, 2012 at 6:40 pm #687930
pattileaParticipantI remember it all, too! Very fun to look back. I remember a hardware store on the corner of Alaska. Peoples drug store, a Fire station where the farmers market is. Kress’s and Meridith. Vann Bros restaurant. The menu cafe, west seattle florist. maria’s Mexican restaurant.
September 1, 2012 at 1:26 am #687931
Genesee HillParticipantDoes anyone remember when there were only two draw bridges to West Seattle? And a lousy U.S Senate Democrat helped get funding for the High Bridge after a drunk Boat Captain hit one of the two draw bridges.
I do.
